Question:
Does insurance alway pay for surgery when they
I was told my a nurse todat that sometimes, even though you get approved, insurance doesn't pay. Does this mean my approval is worthless? Why would they say yes, let me get it, and say no? This ever happen to anyone? — Kicker (posted on July 1, 2002)

I have never heard of that before, but I would make sure I had the approval
in writing. I can not imagine an insurance company doing that. Good
Luck!

All insurance policy's - when trying to get approval say that nothing is a
guarantee but that's simply a disclosure they have to read regarding all
surgeries. If you get your pre-approved letter from your insurance
company, log and keep everything you get - start a notebook and record the
people you've spoke with and the date and time you talked to them and just
keep track of everything. It would be a tough, tough case for the
insurance company to win after giving authorization in writing to you &
to your surgeon prior to surgery. Just remember - they always say that - I
use to verify coverage for a hospital and it's all part of the routine. A
surgery this big won't be given approval and then backed out of - if any
insurance company ever tried it, there would be major possibilities for
litigation and I guarantee, you'd win.

Every instance I've ever heard of where insurance has backed out - it's
always been prior to the surgery. But if they did you
are ultimately responsible for any and all charges.
