Question:
Don't know the difference in surgery types. Will doc pick?

I don't know the different types of surgery. Will the doctor pick which one is best for me and my body type?    — angela D. (posted on May 9, 2002)

Many surgeons only do one type of procedure while others offer a variety. Also, some insurance companies will dictate which procedures they pay for. There are benefits and risks to all procedures so you'll want to do some research. This website is a great place to get started. I'm sure you surgeon will guide you as well. Best wishes to you!

Check the "Library" link above for descriptions of the different surgery types. Then ask your doc which surgery(s) they do and make a decision if it's best for you.

Most docs. will inform you (veery well) about the different surgery types. Ultimately you will make the decision. Just listen carefully and ask lots of questions. Then, together-if you still aren't sure, you and the doc. can discuss what you think is the best type of surgery for you.

I wouldn't depend on your doctor to give you an overview of all the different types of surgery. It is not uncommon that doctors only do one type and are not very informed about the others (just like many PCPs aren't informed about WLS in general!). Do your research on the different types of WLS: RNY (distal, proximal, medial, transected or stapled), DS, Lap Band, VBG, etc. I think this is important, especially so that you are aware of what life is like post-op before you end up on the other side! It is also important to evaluate the pros and cons specific to each type of WLS. This is a huge decision, and you want to make sure you have enough info to make the best one possible. Once you narrow it down to a WLS that you can live with, you will be able to ask your doctor more productive questions based on the research you've done. And don't forget to research your surgeon too! Good luck! :)

my doctor only does the open r.n.y. banded,, and he explained why he feels it is the "gold standard" of w.l.s. but w.l.s. is like chili,, everyone thinks what the had (or make) is the very best.. some doctor's offer a choice, 2 surgeons told me, because of my size at my evals, that the r.n.y. open was the best for me,, and i'd lose the weight faster, which i needed for health reasons,, 6 months out down to 268# and still dropping fast, from a starting weight of 425# ,, like others say here, do the research yourself,, but keep an open mind,, it's your body and your choice..but i promise you w.l.s. saves and changes lives,,and i am living proof,,, good luck
