Question:
Upper GI showed mild Reflux. How is this going to hinder my RNY?

I wrote a post on the Message board, but forgot to ask a question I had. The Radiologist said I have mild reflux. (On a scale from 1-10, 1 being mild and 10 being the worst), I have a 1-1/2 reflux problem. How is this going to hurt my chances on getting my RnY NEXT week? Also, how is this going to hurt me in the long run, say years down the line? Heart burn for life? Tums everywhere in the house, car, purse? :p Thanks, Annie    — Annie R. (posted on August 2, 2001)

Anne - I also have had reflux for several years and took 30 mg of Prevacid every day to help combat it. I am 3 1/2 weeks post-op and the last Prevacid I had was the day of my surgery. Since then, no heartburn, no acid coming back up into my throat.....nothing at all! It has been wonderful! My surgeon said this surgery basically takes away the reflux because the pouch is now not the part of your stomach that has the digestive acid in it. Good luck on your surgery and say good bye to heartburn forever!!!

I also had a mild case of reflux. My surgery went as scheduled on May 1, 2001. According to the papers I signed prior to the surgery, I was also given a "hernia repair" that got rid of the extra space that was allowing for the reflux. This was routing for my surgeon. Good Luck to you Valerie

I've been cured of my reflux and it was pretty bad. I'm 7 1/2 months post op and haven't had medication for reflux since about 2 months out. It won't hurt your chances of having surgery.

RNY cures reflux. The reflux is the 'backing up' of stomach acid. The new pouch has no stomach acid, therefore, no reflux. viola! The old stomach will still produce stomach acid and some people get an ulcer because of it. My surgeon does a vagotomy to keep us from getting this ulcer in the 'old' stomach. Ask your surgeon about doing a vagotomy.
