Question:
Should you wait till after you have children?
Would it be OK to get the surgery done and then have children? I have tried every diet and they did not work for me. I want to be able to my enjoy children and play with them when I have them. — Kim D. (posted on June 5, 2001)

My doctor said it is perfectly fine to get pregnant after surgery. They
suggest waiting 1-2 years post op as this is the most critical time in your
weight loss journey.

I will not be in the majority, but then again I never am. I work in an
obstetric office. All I can tell you is more than 85% of the WLS patients
I see pregnant have regained a significant amount of weight by the time of
delivery and very few of them take that weight back off. It can be done by
you must be steadfast in your commitment to maintain a healthy weight. I
personally waited seven years to have my children and now I am scheduled
for surgery 6/25/01. God bless you in your quest and please, please
remember the most important thing is to do what YOU feel is best.

Here's my take on it. I grew up with an MO mother who wasn't able to run,
bike, play, etc., with us. I am 22, scheduled for surgery June 21, and
hoping to have kids in a few years. Most women gain 20 - 40 pounds during
their pregnancy, right? It is my hope that after reconditioning my eating
habits following this surgery, I will be able to have a healthy,
"normal" pregnancy. If I gain a few pounds, it's not the end of
the world. My MO mother suffered from gestational diabetes and high BP
when she had my brother and I. Hopefully getting pregnant at a lower,
healthier weight will help me to avoid these problems. I don't know what
the future will hold, but I do know that this is the best option for ME
right now. I hope that I will be able to participate in all of the
activities my mom missed out on. P.S. She's a year out from surgery and
is not missing out on any activities now! :)
