Question:
How likely are you to suffer nausea if you follow the recommended diet to a tee,
I have seen many posts as of late regarding inability to digest food the way a post op should, (say 6 months down the line). How common is this? The nausea the throwing up, etc. Mind you, I am asking only about someone who has followed the very strict diet and not about the post op's who are able to eat Chinese or McDonald's 3 weeks out. (Don't mean to step on anyone's toes). Thanks in advance for posting. — [Anonymous] (posted on May 18, 2001)

As a 3 month post-op Lap RNY, I pretty much follow everything the doctor
says... I haven't vomitted in 2 months now and the only two times I did was
because I ate too fast and didn't chew well. I do, however, experience
nausea at least once or twice a week. It's nothing that's too
incapacitating at all, just that "queasy" feeling. It passes
usually within an hour or so. I can't call it dumping, because I don't
eat high sugar or fats...and I've had dumping and this isn't it! Hopefully
someone further out than I am can answer your question better. Best
wishes.

The nausea seems to happen to most people regardless and its usually
nothing major.. the vomitting is something it seems everyone does at least
1 time in their first year.. though i don't know that everyone would. I
think with a well controlled diet and easy introductions of new foods would
reduce your risk of nausea and vomitting. Good luck.

I was an ideal patient. I never ate anything that was not allowed . I still
had bouts of nausea while I was healing. but it was no big deal , as far as
I was concerned. I'd just lay down until it passed. As far as vomiting went
, if I ate too much or too fast, even of allowed things, I would throw up.
This was an infrequent occurance again no big deal . I figure I had to
suffer some kind of discomfort considering the overhaul my insides had just
been through.I think the thing was to keep the symptoms in perspective and
not panic. I knew I would get through these things afterall look at all the
thousands of people here at AMOS who have gone before me and lived through
the surgery , made it through the nausea and discomfort made full
recoveries and led enriched lives. Just stay calm. Hysteria breeds hysteria
, and I have noticed a lot of people panic when they become nauseated or
vomit, but by the same token these are symptoms, maybe that we eat or drink
too fast or too much . Review your diet , time yourself. I hope this helps
you.

I am 7 weeks LAP RnY post op. I have and will continue to follow my
doctor's advice. At 4 weeks I was let loose to try pretty much what I
wanted (no sugar...period) starting with soft foods. The only fast food I
have touched is pinto's and cheese from taco bell. This is legal with my
doctor. I have had my time with throwing up. In fact I spoke with my
doctor's office about it today. We agreed that I am making great food
choices but I probably need to slow down. I get nauseated drinking water.
I tend to gulp and not sip. If I gulp, I will have pain almost instantly
until I burb a few times. Real lady like huh! The nausea, as a rule, is
not bad. It is a reminder that you need to pay closer attention to what
you are eating and how rapidly you are eating it. I have learned though
that I feel more comforatble when I touch base with my doctor's office when
I start throwing up too frequently.
