Question:
My husband says I have killer bad breath, does anyone else?
I am drinking 64 oz of water, I just bought some altoids, but is the bad breath from ketones? I am 3 weeks post op open rny proximal and am on a puteed diet. Sometimes this breath even knocks me out! Any suggestions? — claire C. (posted on November 4, 2000)

Yes, in all likelihood the bad breath is related to ketosis. It should
begin to resolve as you are able to advance your diet and the initial rapid
weight loss begins to slow down a little. Keep drinking the water and try
Binaca for Smokers (mouth spray)...I found it at my local drug store and it
was the only thing that worked for me and enabled me to maintain close
relationships during this period :-). Good luck!

One nice thing my support group turned me on to was peppermint oil .
Available at pharmacies. 1 drop in my water bottle and it helped my breath
and more importantly, it helps settle my stomach.

I am 4 1/2 months post op. For the weeks immediately following my surgery,
my husband complained all the time about my bad breath. I tried breath
mints, etc. and found little relief. Then I remembered a diet I tried
years ago based on ketosis. (Interestingly, there is an article posted in
the site today.) I recall one of the side effects of ketosis being bad
breath. The good news is it does go away. It's one of the annoyances that
we have to deal with. BUT it's worth it. Don't get discouraged.
