Question:
I cant tolerate protein supplements
Thanks everyone who helped me with my dumping /gas episode. I am back to clear liquids from full liquids and am trying to add only 2 protein supplements per day. Howeve they are not agreeing with me at all. I have tried extreme pure pro and proscore 100. They seem to give me a few problems while I am drinking them, heartburn, and burping, then later a throbbing feeling in my pouch. later I get massive gas and diarrhea and am up half the night not sleeping. Will this pass? Can i stop protein for a few days to "rest my pouch" I know how important protein is to healing and I am only 6 days post op. ARe there more pouch friendly proteins? some one suggested vita4life. Any and all suggestions are welcome to help me not be "sick to my stomach" I am fine with fluid intake and vits and calcium. — claire C. (posted on October 18, 2000)

I am 3 months post of and my pouch still gets irritated when I
take protein powder supplements. I generally eat "normal"
food...proteins,
etc and I am mostly ok. My blood work says everything is ok in that area.
When I was a month (or less) post op, I had problems w/ nausea, etc and I
had
to keep going back to liquid protein. My surgeon/dietician recommended
BOOST PLUS.
You can buy this almost anywhere and it has lots of protein plus other
nutrients in it.
It has a very smooth consistency and it went down when nothing else would
in those "early"
days post op. Good luck!! (Has your surgeon explored the idea of you maybe
needing to have
a scope done to see if your opening from the pouch to the intestine might
have closed a little?)*

Did you say six days post op? I was on clear liquids for 6 weeks! Clear
meaning anything you could see through. I didn't start protein supps until
after that six week visit , and at that they were in a very diluted state.
What does your doctor say about this? Did he tell you to take them? That is
who you need to consult.
