My best advice is being honest. I know when I went for my psych eval the
doc who was checking me said than in all his years he has only had to
"hold" 3 patients and after they got the help they needed, they
were allowed to move on in the process. He said that he has never denied
anyone.
The reason for the psych eval is to make sure that you are emotionally and
mentally ready for such a huge life change and to give you the tools
necessary to allow this surgery to be successful. If you are honest, you
can find any areas where you may need additional help or support and get it
before you go for surgery. In my opinion, if you lie about anything you are
only cheating yourself.
Just answer truthfully without dramatics. HTH!

I understand how you feel. I was rejected the first time too. Just get
another evaluation if you fail the first one. Not a big deal, just remember
to answer from your head.

Just be honest. During my eval my Dr. kept looking at me straight in the
eyes which made me very nerves. Just be yourself and don't lie to them.
They just want to find out if you are capable of handling such a change in
your life.

I had mine done yesterday.... on Mine they asked you to be honest so I
was..... They asked me several same questions different ways to make sure I
was being honest.... For example they asked me if I believe that through
positive thinking can help me change my attitude...true or false.....then
they asked 20 or so questions later Do I belive that my religion or a
"higher power" can help me with my thinking positively... or
something like that.... not exactly the questions but simular.... Just
relax and be honest about your self and the way you believe things are....
I am sure you will do fine.... Good luck....ohhh you can re-take the test
if you don't do well there really is nothing to worry about.... They are
looking for consistency in your answers.... Another type question was do
you have problems following doctors orders when you are sick....and do you
wait until the last minute to go to the doctor when your not feeling
well.... and do you exergrate how bad you are feeling and do you take other
peoples medicine...Again...nothing to worry about mine was true false
question and there were about 175 of them....Hope this helps:) Chrissie

Mine took about an hour. Basically they were probing for these things (1)
Did I understand what I was getting myself into; (2) Could I participate
as expected in follow-up care (i.e. follow the rules) and (3) Was I
motivated enough to make sure I got full benefit out of what my tool could
do. They wanted to make sure I was fully aware this was not a 'get out of
fat-free card'.

Things that are NOT compatible with the RNY. Active alocholics and drug
addicts, they tend to self destruct while destroying their liver. multiple
personality types like hanibal lectuer. BTW deperession is NORMAL for
MOs.<P> There are BAD psych docs out there, you much better off to
use the one your surgeon recommends. They wouldnt recommend a psych doc who
will put you in endless therapy for $.

Just had mine on 10/12 and all went fine. I really wasn't nervous at all.
I spent a total of about ten full minutes chatting with the Dr. and then he
gave me two questionaires to fill out then took me aside (away from waiting
room area) and stepped out in hallway and he said everything looked fine
and that he would send the results to my surgeon the next day. I think for
$150.00 (out of my own pocket) was well worth it for me and for me to be
able to get such a fast psy. eval apt. only made me closer to getting my
surgery date...which, by the way is Nov. 4th. I wanted the 1st but Doc is
all booked up until the 4th. I think $150.00 is a little steep for 10
minutes worth of time, but hey...it is all worth it to me in the long run
as this is a start for a new life for me. Good luck to you in your psyc.
eval test. It's nothing to worry about!

10/14/04 - Hi Antonina, I just had my psyche eval. on Tuesday, 10/12/04 and
she asked me to describe the type of surgery I am seeking to have, did I
understand the pros & cons (about possible death - yes) of the surgery,
am I depressed (no), low self-esteem (yes), do you have mental illness or
mental illness in the family (no), your medical history & family
medical history. And other minor questions. They are evaluating you to see
if you are of sound mind. Good Luck to you and God Bless! - Shahidah

Ah, the dreaded psych eval! I too was required to have one by my surgeon.
It wasn't the best experience because all he was SUPPOSED to do is make
sure I understood the risks and had realistic expectations. Instead, he
kept blaming my weight on depression and wanted to medicate me. After his
not-so-pleasing letter was sent to my surgeon, I called his ass up and
expressed my disgust. He immediately sent something more appropriate. I
think it's just important to make sure they are evaluating you on the right
things....do you understand the risks and aftercare, are you making an
informed decision, and do you have realistic expectations.
