Question:
About 2 weeks ago I lost all appetite and had diarrhea & stomach pain, went to ER and
they diagnosed appendecitis. Took them out, sent me home still having diarrhea. Was home for 5 days, so very weak & listless. Went back to ER and had c-diff, a terrible bowel infection. Got rid of it but still can't eat anything. so very weak. Only drinking carnatioon inst bkfst w/skim milk. Am on Flagell for infectiion still. Anyone else ever lost appettite totally and just can't eat? Need help desperately. Had my surgery at MAYO Clinic in Jan. They want me to come back there. Sorry so long. — Carlene B. I am so sorry to hear about your complications. I've lost all appetite as
well. I'm told part of that is mental. Another part is pain and
dis-interest in pureed food along with dumping. I'm not having as serious
a problem as you. Yogurt helps fight infection in the bowl. I know big
yucky there, but not so bad if you add SOME of your protein pack, a packet
of spendia or equal and some strawberries (my fruit of choice) blend this
well. Keep in mind you are only having diarrhea because you have nothing in
you. If Mayo is telling you to come back in...go. Take care of you. You
are most important. Please keep me posted. Sherry

Sorry to hear about all this, You might buy some premade protien drinks,
like Atkins or carbsolutions, and drink plenty of water, diarreha, will
cause dehydration, and that may be also why you feel so weak, your
electrolye balance may be off too, If I were you I would go to my pcp
tomorrow and have labs for your electrolytes, and see if you need an Rx for
supplimentation. Are you still taking chewale vitimans, B12 sublinguele,
or injections? A lack of any of these can cause weakness, your body needs
lots of water to keep hydrated, and we have malabsorbtion so we dont get
the vitimans from our food. By all means get back to the Mayo clinic, but
get to your regular doctor tomorrow, before you end up back in the hospital
for dehydration. Good luck to you, let us know what you find out.

I forgot to ask do you have a fever? If so get to the ER now, you may have
an infection froom the appendectomy surgery. Im not a doc, but I just
wanted to let you know this could be another possibility.

SO SORRY ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS. I WAS TRATED FOR DIVERTICULITIS WITH FLAGELL
AND IT CAUSED DIARRHEA AND A BAD METALLIC TASTE IN MY MOUTH. COULD THAT BE
WHY NOTHING TASTES GOOD TO YOU. TRY TO GET YOUR PROTEIN IN SOMEWAY BECAUSE
YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE THAT DRUG ON AN EMPTY STOMACHE. AND DRINK , DRINK,
DRINK, YOUR WATER. HOPE THIS HELPS.

As someone who has experienced not eating or drinking for a month, it is
very easy for people to tell us to eat or drink, but it can be impossible
for us to actually take in either liquids or solids. First, go to the ER
and tell them that you have not eaten or drank anything is X amount of
time. You will need to be hydrated and usually can only get that done at
the ER. Once you are there, do whatever it takes to make them do a
complete work up on you to find out why you cannot eat or drink. You may
read my profile and it will tell you the troubles that I got into for not
eating or drinking for almost a month. I couldn't take my vitamins because
I wasn't eating and I got into serious trouble. Just be careful!!

So sorry you are going thru heck with appendicitis and c-diff. The c-diff
was probably caused by antibiotics you were given post-op from the
appendectomy. Flagyl does not cause diarrhea. It does sometimes cause a
metallic taste. If you are drinking carnation with milk you are at least
getting some vitamins & protein. Try gatorade too. It would be normal
to feel weak after all you've been thru. Start slowly when you start eating
again. Eating bland foods like toast, grilled cheese is good. Macaroni and
cheese too. You'll feel better, it just takes time after all you've been
thru. good luck.
