Yes, you can get infusions if the supplements don't work. Talk to your PCP. Also make sure that you're taking a type of iron that is absorbed well by post-ops.

Are you taking B12 injections? B12 rebuilds the red blood cells and when we have this surgery the part of our body that absorbs B12 is the stomach so with that being bypassed we are not getting any from the foods we eat that is why it is important to take B12 and the injections are the best way to make sure you are getting the most absorbtion. My sister in law wasn't taking the B12 until I explained this to her and now after getting the shots her blood work has improved and her anemia is really improving. Hope this helps......Nancy

My blood work was also showing anemia and so the Mayo Clinic started me on Vitron -C.... can be bought over the counter. I do feel better since starting this.. Best of luck to you.

For severe anemia you can get iron infusions. I could not take the prescription iron and ended up on low dose infusions for 36 days. They helped a lot!

You didn't say which type of iron you are using, but some types are more absorbable than others. Ferrous sulfate is not well absorbed. And there are "iron rules". Iron is taken with vit C, never with dairy or caffeine or whole grains, never with other vites, minerals or meds. Alone together, for at least an hour. Most docs use iron infusions, but there is an iron shot. It's given in the glut and can stain, unless you z-track it, then no stain. If you email me privately, I'd give you the names of 2 of them, as written by people who take them.

I went in for my routine check-up and the lab work came back that I had a very low iron and blood count. In additon to that, I was also "bleeding" very heavy and would have 2-3 periods a month! My doctor advised me to go to a GYN and take my lab results with me. The GYN found a "lemon size" growth in my uterus and I was put into the hospital for an emergency hysterectomy! Long story short, don't play around with the low iron - low blood levels, it could be a clue to something very bad going on inside of you!! Good Luck! Danette
