Question:
Is 40 inches of intestine bypassed normal?

That's about what...101cm? Is that a good amount to have bypassed?    — Renee B. (posted on October 29, 2003)

Renee, I believe that is right in the middle of normal. I had 100 cm bypassed and have lost very well (-102# in 5.5 months). I know others that have 75cm or less bypassed and also lose very well.

I had 70 cm bypassed. Down 90 pounds in 6 months. I always wondered if I had too little bypassed? Who knows? No complaints yet!

Renee, I had 150 cm bypassed because mine was a revision and the surgeon thought I may be a little more resistant to loss.

I am pre-op, (11 days and a wake-up)but in my consult. with then surgeon today, he said he was taking about 36 inches or so of intestine out of the 'loop' as it were.. He seems to be set on that number and it works for his patients.

The surgeon I am working with says that 100cms are bypassed on those most commonly only needing to lose 100 lbs on average. He said that 150cms is normally bypassed by most surgeons for those needing to lose 150lbs or more. He said that 200cms can be bypassed in patients needing to lose more massive amounts of weight, like 250+ lbs.

I had only 75 cm bypassed and have lost 140 pounds in 11 months with 5 more to go, it is working for me.

100 centimeters is very common. The trick with how much to bypass is to balance the malabsorption. If too much is bypassed, then you risk malnutrition. If not enough is bypassed, then you won't lose as much weight. 100 cm. is more than some, less than others, but seems to be a good balance for your future health. Best wishes.
