I am only 38 days from my surgery (WOO HOO) and reading through the packet the doctor gave me...I came across a leak type test called "gastrogaffin sallow" test. What exactly is it? — Renee B. (posted on October 4, 2003)

My leak test was done the day after my surgery, all it is, is a Upper GI
without the big cup of stuff. You take a few swallow's of liquid and the
tech looks to make sure that all of your staples are holding and there are
no leaks.

In my case, the next day after surgery I was given a leak test. The first
test was using gastrogaffin. I was told that they use this substance first
because if there is a leak it is less harmful on our systems then the
barium. When the gastrogaffin test came back fine, then another leak test
using the barium was performed. I had an NG tube in so they just put the
gastrogaffin and the barium through the NG tube and I did not have to drink
them (thank God!) After you ingest the contrast they will watch the
gastrogaffin work it's way through your pouch and into your small intestine
and then large intestine using something like an XRay to make sure there
are no leaks.

I am now 5 days post op, generally feel like crap and at this point so very
sorry I made this decision. My swallow test made me very sick and I slept
the balance of the day and then was released from the hospital directly
from ICU.
