Question:
has anyone else needed a splenectomy as a complication to open RNY?

I am wondering about any health problems down the line that could be related to losing the Spleen. Mine was removed during my open RNY due to bleeding. Any one else?    — lulu D. (posted on July 23, 2003)

I too lost my spleen during my open VBG surgery. I had mine 3/18/03 and other than having to get 3 shots after losing it and having to get one every 5 years for life that's all that I know of problem wise. I have a friend who lost his as a child and he is 33 now and has had no problems at all.

I had a spleenectomy, due to an illness a few years back. I have never had to have any sort of medication, nor have I had any issues with it. I was told it would be no problem at all.(I am pre-op) Best wishes to you!
