Question:
Has anyone with a Bicuspid aorta valve & aortic stenosis had WLS?
I have aortic valve stenosis with a bicuspid aorta valve and am wondering if anyone has had WLS (gastric bypass) with this type of heart condition? Where there any restrictions and what about taking antibiotics before dental procedures? — kasaiya (posted on July 6, 2003)

Hi there
I have pulmonic stenosis with a bicuspid pulmonic valve (my non-obese
brother has aortic valve stenosis, as you do), and so I'm familiar with
what you're talking about. I have been monitored by Deborah Heart &
Lung Center since infancy, and so I went to them for clearance for surgery.
Since my stenosis is mild and I've never had any restrictions, I had no
trouble getting clearance for the RNY. I spoke to my surgeon about the
need for antibiotics, and he said that it is standard pre-op to administer
antibiotics anyway. Everything worked out very well for me. I am sure my
little pulmonary valve is much happier without the extra weight, too :) I
hope you have a good cardiologist who can discuss your WLS concerns with
you--you may have to be the one educating your DR about WLS, so he/she can
tell you if anything is contraindicated for you. Good luck!
