Question:
Anyone had issues with water retention post-op?
i'm almost 8 weeks post op and it seems that, no matter how much water i drink (at least 60 oz/day) i rarely go to the bathroom and when i do my urine is typically a dark yellow color. i've also been loosing weight pretty slowly - down about 30 pounds. i don't eat tons of salt or high-sodium foods. any thoughts on why i seem to be retaining water, and whether this can be contributing to my slow weight loss? — carolsaunders (posted on June 22, 2003)

60 ounces of water is not enough. 80 ounces should be the starting point,
the MINIMUM. I get 80-100 ounces of water, plus 2 cups of decaf, a glass of
Crystal Light (mix my Benefiber with it), and usually an evening cup of
herbal tea. Dark urine means your kidneys are having to work too hard. The
water really helps speed up the weight loss, too. Good Luck to you - Anna

You really should discuss this with your doctor - maybe have your kidneys
checked. Even though it's preferred that you have an excess of 60 ounces a
day, your urine should not be dark from that amount and you should be going
fairly regularly. Please call your doc.

Although 60 oz. is not excessive, it is a low end adequate amount of water
in the opinion of my Dr. and nutritionist. I would go by the advice of
your Dr., but certainly ask him why you are not "going" that
often and why your urine is dark. I drink approximately that amount and
mine is usually quite pale. Beat of luck!!!

I read a couple of different things. One - Dark urine is a sign of
dehydration. Your body is storing water. You actually need then to drink
more. Another thing I read is that when you are in ketosis, the urine is
often dark. I would see your dr if you are still concerned.

I was losing very slowly and my left foot and ankle was swallen all the
time. I asked my surgen about it and he told my to go to my reg. Dr. he
gave me a water pill and I lost 24lbs in two weeks. I only take one every
other day or so but the weight is coming off about 3 to 4 lbs. a week.
