Question:
How do you get around the sugar substitutes making you sick?
I had my surgery May 6, 2003 and I find that I can not stand all of the sugar substitutes in everything I consume. It is in the vitamins, gas X, TUMS, Jello, Crystal lite. I feel sick once I eat so much of this stuff. Any suggestions? — Diana D. (posted on May 12, 2003)

Hi Diane, I am 3 mths. post-op and have had the same problem with some
vitamins especially children's chewable I couldn't stand them and the
crystal lite was just too sweet for me to drink and I still can't drink it
to this day, and even jello too. I had it so much in the hospital that I
can't even stomach it now. The only thing i can tell you is try something
else instead like sugar-free koolaide or sugar-free flavored water that you
can get in the grocrey store and as for food and vitamins, you might want
to switch also like to liquid vitamins, or ask your docabout that and tums.
And, as for food, I stayed away from jello and just ate other soft foods,
like sugar-free pudding, soups, and that's about it for about 5 weeks, you
might want to ask your doc or nutritionist about that too. Good luck to
you, I know what you are going thru.

What do you mean, making you sick? Taste nasty? Come back up? Headache? And
the sweeteners, all the same? EVery one different? One you can ditch is
Tums. Unless you are specifically taking it to do with kidneys or
something, you surely don't need it. It IS good for making kidney stones,
not a good source of calcium. Can swallow adult multis yet? I was unable
to tolerate Nutrasweet when I had my surgery. Back in those days, it was
that or sugar. I lived on WATER for my first 3 weeks. It could be worse,
right?
