Question:
How Much Protein is enough?
My concern now is if I am getting enough, my Dr. has me on 48-59 grams a day. How is it decided on how much a person needs? does anyone have any ideas? — maureen (posted on April 7, 2003)

I don't know about this height/age thing. I'm only 5'3" and 54 years
old and my surgeon tells everyone to get in a minimum of 70 grams of
protein a day. For the past year I have been getting closer to 100 per day
(as suggested by those who advocate it to increase weightloss) but my
surgeon states it's not necessary. 48-59 grams seems a bit low to me.

I try for 100 grams per day. My profile has a lot of information on
protein and links to do further research.

Well, as you can see, another topic on which surgeons disagree. Mine says
to get in a minimum of 60. Keep in mind that we all (RNY) malabsorb,
though how much we malabsorb is anyone's guess. So, that means that some
of the protein we eat is not absorbing and therefore it makes sense to
strive for more than the minimum. The protein shakes, especially those
that are 100 percent whey protein isolate are the best forms of absorbable
protein. Can't hurt to do at least one of these a day as added protection.
Your labs will also let you know what your protein levels are....

You can use the old .8 g per kg of body wt. OR the 1.2kg per kg, which is
more appropriate for muscle wasting (repid wt loss) OR go with the latest,
which is 1 g per lb. Now, that's fine for someone who weights like
120-150, but if you are starting at 400#, that might be a little over kill.
I'm speaking only protein supplement here. I never count protein food
toward my totals. I take 150-180g with my distal bypass, but the very
minimum would be 60g. If you want more appetite or volume control &
are not making it with any added sugars (milk, juice, fruit), there's not
really a top end, as long as you stick with the 30g per serving concept.
