Question:
I have sleep apnea for 5 years and pre op.
My question is this. Is there anyone out there that still had to use the cpap after losing all their weight? I want so much to get rid of it. — Barbara T. (posted on March 7, 2003)

My doc says when I get under 200# he will repeat the sleep study and I will
most likely be able to come off cpap. Have been on it since 1995. It saved
my life. Down 104#, 100# to go. Good luck to you.

I have lost over 100 pounds and went to have a sleep study when I was about
85 pounds down. My pressure had been at 18, but in the step-down unit I
was in, the respiratory people decided it needed to be 9. So after I'd
been home for a couple of months, I called the pulmonologist and asked him
to order another sleep study. I was sure I'd be able to quit using it.
Imagine my total DISMAY when they said I needed to have it set at 14. I
will probably not have another one done for at least another 6 months
because I'm not sure my insurance will pay for another one before then. I
know that people take themselves off the machine, but I think you are wise
to have another sleep study before you do so.
