Question:
Knocked out or Spinal Block?
Ok...I recently heard that someone under went this surgery with a spinal block instead of being completely knocked. What's the deal with that? I CANNOT have anything in my back again...will I be able to choose to be completely knocked out or not? — Renee B. (posted on February 9, 2003)

My understanding is that Bariatric surgery requires the patient to be out
completely under general anesthesia. I never even had a choice in the
matter, but would've chosen to be out anyway. Take care.

I don't know of anyone who did not have general anasthesia. However, some
docs put in an epidural for pain control post-op. Maybe that is what
you've heard about.

I had a choice between a spinal to block the pain or I could have the Pump
with Morphene (?SP) I chose the pump because I had back surger in 1982. I
just had my Open RNY done 12/16. The lady in the bed next to me chose the
spinal to block the pain. It was put in after she was out from the general
anestetic. (SP?) No matter which way you go, you will have to be put out
all the way. Good Luck

You MUST be under general anesthesia for RNY. The body must be completely
paralyzed. Have spinal or epidural blocks are only means of pain control
and not available during the actual procedure. Best wishes to you!
