Question:
I am 4 weeks post-op and was told to eat every 2-3 hrs while awake do we do that just
post-op or do we do that from now on? and why? — Edie C. (posted on January 16, 2003)

If your surgeon told you that, then do as the surgeon says. If it wasn't
your surgeon, ask him. I ate a bite or two every couple of hours at that
stage, but don't do that now. Maybe it is just to help keep your blood
sugars normalized so you don't get overly hungry and eat too much and hurt
your new stomach. Good Luck!

Check with your surgeon and/or nutritionist. Mine told me to eat 5-6
small meals during the course of the day. The best spacing for those is
2-3 hours. #1 - it helps keep your blood sugars more steady through the
day and #2 - it's easier to eat 5-6 smaller meals than 2-3 larger meals,
especially in the earlier stages of post-op...JR (open RNY 07/17 -139 lbs)

I still do that, even 3 1/2 yrs out, as time permits. I find that, in
addition to keeping blood sugars stable, it keeps me from getting so hungry
that I overeat. IMO, that's a much healthier way to eat, as is 5-6 small
meals a day. I really believe that 3 meal-a-day thing was what put the
weight on me. By dinner time, I was so hungry, I'd shovel the food in. No
more, thank goodness. So, give it a try. :)

My nutritionist said she wanted us to get between 60-70 grams of protein
and 30-40 grams of carbs each day. Whether we got them in 3 squares or 5
minis she didn't care so long as we got it in. I believe that the 5 minis
is a good plan and hope to pursue this way of eating when I am further
along than I am now (only 9 days postop). I do not like feeling famished
and have been on food plans with 5 mini meals and find it works GREAT to
keep hunger at bay (and that is with a regular stomach).
