I feel this is too much but I didn't feel sick and I didn't get the full feeling? Open gastric bypass 12/10/02 32lbs gone forever! — Pam J. (posted on January 8, 2003)

I would be concerned that is too much. But then again the filling is
pretty liquified. There isn't a whole lot of solid food with a pot pie. I
would say it would be similar to eating soup. It is probably running out
of your pouch too soon. The more solid the food, the longer it stays in
your pouch and therefore the longer you feel "full". If you can
eat the same volume of food that is solid, THEN I would worry. Remember
not to drink before, after, and during meals. Try reading, "pouch
rules for dummies" it has a lot of good tips on how to get the most
from your pouch. I hope that helps. Good luck!

not to scare you but that does seem like a lot consult with ur surgeon! I
am a year out and still eat very small amounts, I havent tried to eat a pop
pie but the mere thought alone makes me ill, just talk to your surgeon
maybe the prev poster is right its more like a soup so u were able to eat
it but gosh that does seem like a lot even for soup. good luck

I recently prepared a homemade chicken pot pie (the filling is not liquid)
and was only able to eat about three bites before feeling uncomfortable. I
am 15 weeks post-op. I agree with the previous posters- contact your
surgeon. Your pouch should not be able to hold that much. Then again, your
surgeon may have made your pouch larger than others. Are you able to eat
that much of anything else? Try the cottage cheese test to figure out the
size of your pouch....Good luck! ....Karen (lap rny- 9/20/03- down 94
pounds)

Unfortunate, sometimes the stoma is too big and the food does not stay in
the pouch, but goes strait through. It is like not having surgery at all.

What kind of pot pie are we talking here? How many ounces did the package
say it was? Was it one of the dinky swanson ones? If so and you felt
really stuffed afterwards then I would say it's all okay... just try not to
do that so soon after surgery. If it's a bigger Hungry man or those other
bigger varieties out there.. then I'd be pretty worried.

I agree with the last poster... More than likely its a 'large stoma'. I
noticed/thought I was eating to much right out of surgery... and mentioned
it to my surgeon. Who was "to new' at the time... He was surprized I
could eat 1/2 cup of anything but assumed since I wasnt throwing up I wasnt
overeating. It wasnt until 6 months post after me triing to do the cottage
cheese thing, that he sent me in for 'tests' Upper GI showed NO pouch
function at all. First of all, if THIS is your problem, you will still
loose weight...the malabortion portion of your RNY will still be working..
BUT the portion control will NOT be there. Unfortunately, if this is your
problem 99% of surgeons out there, according to the ABSA (or what ever the
initials are) state that surgeon have know about this problem for years,
have had little sucess in fixing it... so refer their patients (and mine
did... to "just diet and excercise". Its very fustrating... :(

Be careful! It may not be 32 lbs. gone forever if you eat a whole pot pie
at one sitting! This surgery is just a tool. We can, and will, gain the
weight back if we begin eating too much again. My doctor's office
recommends protein ONLY until 75% of patient's weight is off. Good luck!

FIrst, look at the fat content in a pot pie...it may make you not want ot
eat one agian! THat said, I certianly hope that you do not have a large
stoma. I certianly could not have eaten more then a few bites of anything
at 5 weeks. But you do not say how long it took for you to eat this. Are
you stopping after 20-30- minutes? Sometimes it takes a little while before
we realize what "full" feels like, because it is different after
this surgery. Take it easy, try to stick with some more protein and less
fat foods. Hopefully your "full" feeling will show up soon!
