Question:
I'd like to hear from other slow losers who reached goal

I am threee and a half weeks post op and find your support to my questions so supportive. I finaaly got weighed today and lost 20 pounds while everyone else who was with me lost double. I'm worried that at this rate I won't make it to the slim me I had hoped for. I started at 246.7. If you did well and started slow, please respond.    — elaine27 (posted on January 6, 2003)

I was a slow loser (and still am). My surgery was on April 5th of 2001 and in the past 9 months I have lost 82 pounds. That's less then 10 pounds per month. I did have a plateau for 3 months straight also. I see now that I have to actually make an effort to lose the last 25 pounds. This surgery is a tool. In the beginning it seems like, Wow! this is going to be easy". but we soon learn that the surgery is a tool and we have to be conscience of what we eat and how much or we will end up back where we started. Good luck with you weight loss. Don't be discouraged because it's coming off slower. We didn't put on all this weight in a few weeks so it's not going to come off that quick either. God Bless us all!

Hi Darlene. I feel like I was the "QUEEN" of slow losers. I had a revision from a stomach stapling back in 1984, to a lap RNY on 9/27/01. At 2 1/2 months I had only lost 24 lbs.! I was so down about it. But I just hung in there and and it seemed that at about 4 1/2 months things begin to change. The weight started to come off faster. You know, we are all different and our bodies really are a amazing things. I am now at my Dr.'s realistic goal, and just 5 lbs from my personal goal. I started out at 258 lbs. I am 5' 6", and I know weigh 151, and hope to get down to 146, I am hoping w/ some plastic surgery, I will accomplis that. I am a size 8 (sometimes a 6), and I feel great! If you would like you may e-mail me at: [email protected]

I lost a great percentage of my excess in the first 6 months, although it doesn't sound like a lot to other faster losers, because I had less to lose. The second half of the year was a lot slower, but pretty consistent with about 3-5 lbs. a month. I made it to goal (normal BMI, body fat) within 1 year. I would still love to lose another 10-15 lbs., but its taking some hard work. 14 months post-op, 245/149. My loss, by date, is on my profile, along with photos that need to be updated:~)

Hi Darlene, First off, I am not at goal yet :( I have about 48 lbs to go. I just wanted to share my experience with you. I am 11 months post-op and feel like I am the QUEEN of slow losers!! I only lost 25 pounds at my one month visit, which included 6 I had lost pre-op!! Talk about depressed!! Since then, I've seen a lot of people use the word ONLY when they say what they've lost, and yet they ALL lost MORE than me!! Even more depressing! But I try not to let it get me down too much. I just keep going and doing what I think is right. I am 11 months post-op now, and down 92 lbs (only!!). I sure wish it was more! My 1 year anniversary is 1/31/02. I HOPE to be down a total of 100 lbs by then. The weight loss has slowed down considerably, my appetite has increased and what I can take in has increased also. I don't dump on sugar foods (shame on me for trying them!). I never liked when I was told this surgery is only a "tool", but you know what - they are right!! I have to WORK at losing more. This is NOT the easy way out (as so many think it is!). I find as long as I keep my carbs down (below 20g per day) I do much better. I am HUNGRY most of the time (hate to admit it, seems like I am the minority for this on this site). I could eat way more than I do. But I also found I HAVE to exercise! At one point, I actually enjoyed the exercising, but now have lost that "vigor". But, I go by the words JUST DO IT! I exercise 5 days per week, give myself two days off. It seems to be working, but for me, coming up on one year, I know it will be a battle to lose and reach goal (goal = 137lbs, I am now 185 lbs, so I have 48 lbs to go). I just keep reminding myself that these new habits (eating little carbs, eating the right foods, exercising 5 days per week) have to be LIFETIME habits, or I will GAIN it back!! Yikes - don't want that!!! I wish you the best of luck!!!

Well if Patti and Elayna are the Queens, then can I be the Princess of Slow Losers? I started at 261 (day of surgery, after losing 15 lbs. pre-op), and lost 17 lbs. per month for the first 2 months. So, no, I don't think you're unusually slow for a lightweight. It just "seems" slow when comparing to others who have more to lose because they have much more fluids in the body to lose, which come off in the beginning in a fast way. I'm 8 months out now and have lost 93 lbs. from my highest pre-surgery weight of 276. I'm 183 now. I still have about 30 lbs. to go (I'm tall, 5'8"), but I'm giving myself a full year to do this. I'm slow, but maybe the saggy skin will be less going at this slow rate (I can hope, right?) Hugs, Joy

Everyone is different. Some lightweights, and yes, you are one, lose slow and steady and make it to goal in 6 months to a year, and others take longer or seem to stop just shy of goal and then have to work for it. I fall in that category. I started at 249 and lost to 160 and there I stayed for two whole months! I'm at 11 months post-op now and "working" at it with increased protein, more water, more exercise and lower carbs. I must say that even though it is work, its much easier than it was pre-op! I'm determine to get off the last 10-15 and make it to goal. Check the bottom of my profile for the month by month loss.

I am almost 4 weeks, and I've only lost 22. Heck, I've NEVER lost 20 pounds in a month, so I'm happy! It's all a matter of perspective. Hang in there, we'll both be big losers within a year. :) ~Diana

Darlene~ I'm right there with you. I had surgery Dec. 16 and I don't think I've lost more than maybe 15 pounds. (I haven't weighed in over a week) My clothes all fit the same and I've been sick (nasty cold - word to the wise: 44D made me dump) so i'm overall miserable - I'm sure I'll be better when i get out of this slump.

For what it's worth, this whole issue is really starting to traumatize me...I was looking over my notes and realized that I have only lost 4 (!) lbs. since my birthday in mid-November...the crazy thing is that I have gone down a size, from a 14 to a 12, and my measurements are down 7 inches. However, I do really worry that I won't make it to my goal weight (in the mid 140s range) and size (8) by my year anniversary in April. Oh well...I keep plugging away, following the Weight Watcher program and exercizing (mainly walking). What else have I got to do? Good luck!
