What state do you live in? I have bcbs of nc, and I had no problem. They
wanted a referral from my primary care (AND THE MAIN CRITERIA THEY WANT
NOW IS A HISTORY OF YOUR WEIGHT FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS) My pcp just wrote
it out on a prescription pad, and that was fine with them. Go online to
bcbs and type in your information. Then you will be able to get your
insurance requirements. Go to search and type in "gastric" and
it will bring up the requirements for bcbs requirements for your specific
insurance. Once you meet the criteria ie....having a thyroid test...blood
glucose...sleep aphnea....talking with pyschologist..meeting with a
dietician, and anything else they require. When you have everything they
require, and your surgeon should know what that is, then you should get
approval, if you meet the criteria. Do you have any medical problems such
as arthritis? diabetes? sleep aphena? hypertension? joint problems? all
of these make it a medical necessity.
If you have done all this, and it has not worked, there are sites here at
obesity.com, and a list of attorneys that will go to bat for you. Also,
there is alot of information available on this site to guide you in your
process of fighting the insurance company. Good Luck,
Melinda
