Question:
What is the amount of sugar grams you dump on?
I don't think I dump. I have had about 15 grams of sugar I believe at one sitting before, and felt okay recently. I am now 8 weeks post-op. If i had done this 6 weeks ago, I felt horrible and got cold sweats and diarrhea. I don't think I dump anymore. What is the amount of sugar you usually dump on? Does this mean I am going to have to have more self control when it comes to sweets and such, esp. since I was a former candy lover? THANKS for any info! :) — Lezlie Y. (posted on July 25, 2002)

Oh, I am the sugar tester!! In the beginning I could have up to 15g of
sugar before I would dump. That ammount slowly increased over time and now
at 9 months out I can eat any amount of sugar I can shove down. Not that I
do, but I could. I believe your body naturally adjusts to it over time. I
did not keep testing it. My cravings for sugar drastically goes down when
my protien intake goes up. It did this pre-op as well. Everyone is
different when it comes to the amount of sugar they can tollerate. Just
keep in your mind the 15 grams as the amount you can eat, and dont go over
it.

Wow...how are ya'll so brave? I dumped on sugar hidden in something when I
was about 6 weeks post op and since then the most I have tried is 2 grams
with no effects and am scared to death to go higher...

I have never dumped the most I have ever gotten is a slight stomach cramp
and that's only on sugary cereal with milk. It's a slippery slope you are
playing on. I have no problems eating sugar or anything else and I have
only lost 44 pounds in six months. My advice stop testing or you'll end up
like me.

I drank a whole can of Regualr Coke, 38 grams of sugar, I think and did not
dump but I ate one maraschino cherry and did. I think it varies. I just
try to avoid any sugar, keeping in it my head that this might be the one
time that I really dump severely.

I have never dumped on sugar. The most I have had is 24 grams in a Slim
Fast bar. I have experienced slight nauseau, but thats about it. I've had
other things with sugar, like ice cream and cake, but I eat only a bite or
two of these items, not enough to dump.

Lezlie, its different for everyone with the RNY. Some are highly sensitive
to any amounts of sugar, and others of us, yes, me too, seem to be able to
eat a good amount without any problems. I have noticed 2 minor things that
occured to me when eating sugar..in one case I had mild stomach cramps and
in another case (a few bites of frosted cake), very tired/sleepy. I think
those were dumping symptoms, but nothing like the flu like symptoms I was
hoping to get whenever I ate sugar. I'm like you-a sugar/candy lover...

Totally varies as everyone has said, but I won't eat anything past 10-12g
at a time. Never dumped on that. I never tried anything higher though
since I dont want to get back into that habit anyway.

I had my surgery on 4/15/02 and don't dump. I have lost 64 lbs so far, but
i can have regular sugar foods and not get sick. Because I stay away from
them, I noticed regular sugar foods tend to be too sweet for me. That
helps me stay away. I think if I didn't stay away, I would have not lost
as much as I have.

At first, it was just 5-6g to make me dump. Even fruits. Then it was 12,
then 17, then 23....hmmm, I had gradually increased my tolerance. And it
cost me 6#. I reset my dump-o-meter, and lowered that tolerance back into
the single digits. Every now & then, I get stupid (I think I'm so
clever at the time) and slowly raise that tolerance. Then when my pants
are snug, I slap me around, reset again and am fine. You CAN increase your
tolerance until you have regained every single pound you lose, so do hope
you keep that tolerance as low as possible!
