Question:
Why don't our stomachs growl?
I know this may sound silly, but Iam almost a year post-op and I was sharing my story with a new found freind the other day and when I told her that my stomach does not growl any more and that I dont get hungry like before, she asked why? Does anyone know the medical reason to why our stomachs don't growl???? And as I type this Iam made to wonder if in fact your stomach growls, Iam just assuming that since mine no longer does that no ones does? Ok now I have confused myself, lol. If anyone knows the anwser please email me, Thank you. — Malynda S. (posted on May 23, 2002)

I am only 2 weeks post-op, and my stomach does growl. It's kind of
annoying. I had heard pre-op that I wouldn't be hungry for months, maybe a
year, and that my stomach wouldn't growl. But that has not been the case
with me. I have been hungry--and I mean real hunger, not just head hunger.
Luckily, I eat a little bit of food, and the hunger goes away, as does the
growling. I would like to hear from others on this issue as well.

Mine hasn't growled yet, but hunger came back at month 2. And the hunger
is stronger than pre-op, its just satisfied quicker. 6 mo. post

My stomach definitely DOES growl and I am only two weeks post-op. I had
also heard that most people don't get hungry anymore, but my stomach growls
alot and I get hungry too. I'm just glad that I get satisfied quicker now
and I am hoping that my hunger will go away once I start eating solids
again.

My stomach growls so loud other people can hear it, especially after I
drink. I also have a lot of gas pains so they may be associated. I find I
need to take Gas-X pills fairly often.

I'm 11 months post-op, and my stomach has just started to growl. But it's
not the same as before surgery, where I could FEEL it growl. Now I can
barely feel it, and it's only happened a couple of times. I'm wondering if
it doesn't have something to do with less stomach acid. Good thing to ask
the surgeon!

Your not alone! I'm 3 weeks post-op and my stomach hasn't growled nor do I
ever feel hungry. Don't know why though......(tapping finger on head)

18 months post op. Mine doesn't "growl" anymore, but it
"rumbles" a little. When I get a hunger pain, it is more of a
"sinking" sensation and it usually means NOW. A drink will pacify
me long enough to swallow a couple of bites of something. If I don't feed
it, I get queasy.

At 6-1/2 months post op, my stomach growls all the time. AND it's loud.
My co-workers even hear me.

My belly growls and I get ravenous. However, I am satisfied with
considerably less food than pre-op. One of the myths I fell for was I would
no longer get hungry and that my belly would never growl again. I was
horrified the first time it happened and convinced something was wrong. I
called my surgeon's office and was told that it's rather normal. *Sigh* to
my dismay...but I'm getting used to it. -Kim open RNY 7/17 -111

I am 6 weeks post op. My stomach growls like crazy.. you can hear it for
miles I bet! It started growling when I was still in the hospital. The
nurses just kept teasing me about it. It does go away when I start to eat,
doesn't last as long as I eat.

Malynda, I'm 1 week post op and my stomach growled for the first time
yesterday! I'm so glad you posted this question, because I was worried
about it! I ended up eating some sugar free jello and was ok, but I'm glad
I'm not alone. Good Luck!

I remember in school, talking about the scientific reason as to why our
stomachs do growl. They said that when there is little or no food in our
stomachs, our intestines squeeze together trying "find" the food.
And if there is nothing there it's squeezing "air" or squeezing
nothing at all. Which it makes like a squeshy sound for the fluids running
through which to us sounds kinda growl-like...
