Question:
Clarification of our sugar intake Post Op.

I have read different sources in regards to sugar subsitutes and natural sugars. Some say take Splenda, some say take Nutra Sweet, or natural sugars. Can anyone offer their two cents on the matter? I would appreciate the responses. Thanks!    — Kristee (posted on January 20, 2002)

My doctor and her entire office staff are big advocates for using Splenda in EVERYTHING. I've tried it and loved it. You can even bake with it! I drink decaf tea every day and for that I use sweet n low out of habit but for baking, to put on cereal or cream of wheat, I use the Splenda. My doctor also said not to consume more than 12 grams of sugar per serving. Hope this helps!

Be aware that 'natural' sugars can also cause dumping. Fruit juices have quite a lot of sugar in them. I think one of the best hints I've heard is to be vigilant about reading labels and staying under a certain limit. I think I've seen 12 grams in a number of posts.

i am (was?) a sugar addict. sugar in the tiniest amount makes me dump BIG TIME. i have found SPLENDA! so now i am a 'sweet' addict instead of a sugar addict. lol. no aftertaste like the other sugar substitutes.

I've made a decision not to eat sugar as a post-op. My surgery (open RNY) was 6 weeks ago as of tomorrow. I don't know if I dump, although I think I have twice after drinking a small amount of orange juice. Cakes, cookies, ice cream etc are huge binge foods for me and I can't even eat them made with artificial sweeteners. I believe its the textures as much as the ingredients that set me off. I don't have a problem with artifically sweetened drinks, but I have also given up my beloved Diet Coke due to the carbonation question. To me its easier not to eat sweets at all than it is to control the portion. If that makes any sense.

Has anyone heard of Stevia? It's a natural sugar that comes in liquid or powder. The only place I have found it is at health food stores.

SPLENDA all the way for this kid... I was/am a recovering sugar addict...Splenda allows me to cook a nice "occasional" treat for myself... I watch this very carefully as I know that even these SF treats cause carry a lot of carbs... and I avoid carbs like I avoid refined sugar!!!

Also another benefit of Splenda is that there are no cancer warnings stamped all over it...plus it truly tastes much better than any other sugar substitute out there.
