Question:
Do others not dump??

Hi, I am just about 12 weeks post op Lap (VERY PROXIMAL) RNY. Yesterday, I ate things I wasn't supposed to. Summer Sausage, Cheese Curds, Jalapeno Cheese, Taco Dip and chips, and raw veggies and regular dill dip. I didn't overeat, and this was spread out over lunch and dinner and snacks. BUT, I didn't dump. It didn't occur to me that I was having fat fat fat! (My old habits are haunting me). ANyhow, I thought about this for a while, and wondered if I am not a dumper. At least on Fats. As far as sugar goes, I am too afraid to tempt that. But I do use creamer in my morning cup of java, and that has sugar in it. I probably had about 10 g of sugar from time to time, and feel just fine. OH, and as far as lactose goes, I was lactose intollerant mildly before surgery, and now, I don't seem to be anymore! Its like, what is supposed to happen, with the dumping and the lactose intollerence, for some reason, doesn't. <p> I had this surgery for the dumping. Am I cursed? Or is it more likely that I have a tollerence, and if I were to have any more at a meal, I would then dump? To top all of this off, I haven't lost any weight for about a week and a half, and this morning I weighed, and lost 2 pounds from yesterday! Even with all that fat! Weird. Anyhow, I would love to hear from others who have been in my shoes before. Thanks, Annie    — Annie R. (posted on November 5, 2001)

I have never "dumped" and i am 3 months post op..i can eat sugar or even deep fried stuff IF i so wish to...however i don't most of the time....I do feel not so good and quesy after eating them on the occasion that i have. I think you know the things you are eating are the very things that got you in trouble to begin with and need to make a more concious effort not to go near them being you don't get the dumping syndrome that stops some from eating this. My motivation is watching myself get smaller...and whenever i picture these foods that i loved so much that got me fat...i also think of that first picture of me before surgery. Many go into this surgery thinking they won't have to work at their weight loss but it just simply isn't true...it is something all of us will have to work at for the rest of our lives.

I am like you, my surgery was july 23rd. I have never dumped. I intentionally eat some fats to hopefully prevent gallbladder problems. Down 89 pounds and feeling great. If I eat a lot of sugar the most I get is a bit nauseous, and that passes quickly. I tolerate all foods and am trying to do anything in moderation. Not dumping is a blessing and a curse, you can read more about this in my profile.

I could dump on the FUMES from a Cinnabon. But never have felt bad on fats at all. The reason it doesn't fatten you up is because you are malabsorbing some of your fats. That doesn't affect the dumping or not dumping, as the dumping (or not) and the malabsorbing take place in 2 totally different areas. AS to your sporadic wt loss, that's how it is from now on out. You SLIIIIIIIIDE at first, then stair step the rest of the way down, the stairs becoming smaller til you are done. That's good, because it would be hard to slam on the brakes on a 30# per month loss! Even though we'd PREFER that method! Be sure you are not getting a constant flow of sugars all day in milk, applesauce, yogurts and other "healthy" foods. That lowers your sensitivity to sugars, so not doing you any favors.

Bad news! Some of us do not experience dumping. One of the reasons why I opted for rny was that I thought, as a carb addict, dumping would be a way of eliminating my sugar addiction. Wrong! In three years, I've only had two true dumping episodes...one after eating Sweet & Sour chicken and the other after eating Chocolate Cream pie. These two episodes were awful and I avoid these foods...I won't even touch a spoonful. Nothing else bothers me. That's why I am having such a hard time losing the last 30-35 pounds. I can't control the need to eat sweets. The thing that saves me is that I can't eat a lot of food, I think my pouch must still be quite small because I fill up quickly and I tend to stay full for quite some time. So, I've been gaining and losing the same five pounds for almost two years. I'm someone who certainly could have benefited for the dumping syndrome....it just doesn't happen for some of us.

I can't say that I really dump either. I dumped the day after surgery when I was served regular jello and didn't know it, and once after eating fresh pasta. Desserts etc. don't seem to bother me at all. Occasional mild dumping, not enough. I do find that I am satisfied very quickly though, so even if it is a sweet, it is a very small amount, not like in the binge filled bad old days. Phew!

I don't dump. Sugar makes me slightly nausus... and less as time goes by. I'm afraid I will again get into the sugar and carb trap. But I'm trying hard to avoid sugar as much as I can. But I would say that I DON'T dump.
