Question:
Non-fat dried powdered milk
I had my nutritioist that non-fat, dried milk found in the box at the regular grocerie store is a cheaper, just as good protien source...that way you don't have to buy the protien powder. Has anyone heard this--Does anyone do this? — [Anonymous] (posted on August 14, 2001)

My nutritionist told me the same thing, but I have since come to understand
that it is not true. Most protein mixes are predigested so that all of the
grams that you consume, your body is actually obsorbing, unlike powdered
milk. My husband used to think that he was getting so much protein because
he was using about 1 cup of powdered milk in his coffee a couple times a
day. Yeah.......he likes a little coffee with his sweetener and milk!
GROSS!!! When he started using the protein supplements instead, his energy
returned and he felt a lot better. He also wasn't as hungry as often.
There is so much that you can do with the powdered protein if you don't
like to drink them in shakes. One of Dan's favorite snacks is a thing of
yogurt mixed with a scoop of protein. It is quick and a great way to get
your much needed protein in. I like to do the same thing but add a
spoonful of Lite Cool Whip. Also, SF chocolate pudding mixed with a scoop
of protein mix and some Lite Cool Whip gives you a wonderful mousse-like
snack that is packed with protein. You can eat it as a snack and get in 30
grams of protein. Can't beat that. I made it for my support group meeting
because people are always talking about how they have problems getting
their protein in. EVERYONE loved it. Even the man who was 5 weeks post-op
and told me he would pass because he was SICK OF PUDDING! But once he
heard everyone else's reactions, he tried it and loved it as well.

I have the opinion that nutritionist don't always have the most updated
information. I couldn't stand powdered milk in everything I ate at first
like it was recommended to me too.
