Be sure to stress this to your surgeon, anesthesiologist, nurses or anyone
else involved in your care that you CAN NOT HAVE these meds! They will
certainly have other things they can use. How effective they are, I don't
know. But my guess is the other meds would work just fine. But you must
tell them. Don't be shy ether. If you can not tolerate something, then you
can't tolerate it. I'm sure you are not the first. It will go well, but do
STRESS to them how important this is.

I had open RNY on 6/13, and couldn't have morphine or demerol either. I
was given Oxycotin- tiny pill -twice a day.Plus they put Torodol (sp) in my
IV -it worked great- didnt make me groggy like morphine. The nurse said the
combination of the two seems to be more effective and help people after
surgery. Oxycotin has a bad repution in the media lately because of the way
it's being used for 'recreational" drug use (with good reason)- but it
sure worked well for me those first days when I needed it most - then I was
given Vicodin to take at home, but only used it one day-I was ok without
it. Discuss your options with your surgeon and anesthesiologist ahead of
time - good luck :-)

Hi, Karrie! I agree with Dan on this one. You have to tell your
anesthesiologist in advance what kind of reaction you had to morphine and
demerol. The last time I had surgery I told them I got nauseous when I had
anesthesia, and was given something to counteract the nausea before I was
put under. I woke up clear as a bell, no nausea, even fairly alert
(although I napped later on in the day). There are lots of new anesthetics
and new combinations of anesthetics. I'm sure they can come up with
something to keep you comfortable without resorting to the old
morphine/demerol cocktail.

Hi Carrie, I am not alleric to these meds but I was on both and they made
me delusional. I asked to be taken off and was given Tylenol with Codeine.
It worked, for me that is, just as well. I just had to ring the nurse when
I wanted it. I was also given this as a prescription to take home and it
has done it's job, best of luck to you!
