Question:
Diarreha at 9 days post
I am 9 days post-op (open RNY) and I am still having lots of diarreha. I see my doctor tomorrow and it is question number one on my list...but....is there anything I can do? I already take one pepcid (crushed) a day. Perhaps since I am still on a liquid diet, I am having diarreha? Maybe that will change when I go to a soft food diet? — Denise F. (posted on July 12, 2001)

I had problems with diarrhea early post op, too. I was also on a liquid
diet. I used Imodium AD. It was on my surgeon's list of approved meds. I
took a couple doses and it went away. The best part is the caplets are
extremely tiny and go down easily. Really, if your surgeon approves, give
it a try. It was the answer for me. Hope this helps. Shelley

Many of us are lactose intolerant post-op. And for some, the very high
sugar post-op diets recommended by most clinics are not easy to tolerate.
The milk & sugar routine is tolerable to some, but for others, even
minute amounts of sugar (like milk sugar) will cause intense discomfort.
Try going back to clear SUGAR FREE liquids for 24 hours & see if it
lets up at all.

Michelle....I am not drinking any milk since surgery nor anything with
sugar. Everything I drink is sugar-free. I don't think it's the
sugar....but thanks!

Hi! I had diarrhea at 4 days post-op. I was told to take Imodium AD--I
took the "advanced" chewables to help with the gas. It took the
whole "course" of treatment, but it was worth it. I was told
that our bodies, i.e. colons, deal with this trauma in many different ways.
I'm also told that diarrhea is much easier to deal with than constipation.
Try the Imodium and get plenty of liquids. ((((HUGS))))

Well, the doctor had me get liquid kayopectate (sp) so we will see how that
goes! Thanks for all your feedback, it is all so helpful! Denise
