Question:
Anyone have Mitro Valve Prolapse?
I have Mitro Valve Prolapse and have to have antibiotics before many procedures. I was wondering if anyone else had it and did your Doctor tell you to do anything special before surgery? Did they give you IV antibiotics? Thanks — Gail M. (posted on May 14, 2001)

Hi, I have MVP along with PVCs....I am pre-op...just went for my pre-op
testing today. My surgeon is aware of my condition...and I will remind
them to give me IV antibiotics....in 93 I had my tonsils out and they did
the same then!! Should NOT be a problem!! Good Luck, Karan

I have MVP to and have to take antibiotics before Any type of procedure so
I would think this would be the same. Just remind your Dr. about it. Good
luck to you!

I too have MVP and I was wondering the same thing,if it would hinder the
surgery. I know that I have to take antibiotics every time I go to the
dentist and other times that I have been in the hospital.

MVP is basically a heart murmur. Infection can settle in this area,
causing big time problems. In order to combat this before any infection
can occur, antibiotics are given through the IV prior to surgery, and
sometimes after or a day or so. People with MVP should have antibiotics
prior to any invasive procedure, such as cavity or root canal work, any
type surgery, etc. Its nothing to worry about per say, just something to be
cautioned for. GOOD LUCK! Tam

I am post-op and I have MVP. After a riggerous exam with a cardiologist,
in fact I saw him 5 times before surgery. I was cleared for surgery.
Nothing held up my surgery date either, and my MVP was listed in my file
all over the place. My surgeon and the ansteiologist (sp) discussed my
anitbiotics for my surgery right in front of me and the injected them in my
IV while I was in the pre-op holding area. It did not cause a problem with
my lap RNY.
