Question:
Can you get around insurance that has exclusions on WLS?
My insurance specifically excludes any type of surgical treatment for the morbidly obese. Has anyone out there had a similar scenario? Were you able to get around it? I'd appreciate any feedback! Thanks! — [Anonymous] (posted on May 8, 2001)

Does the policy exclude treatment & surgery for obesity or MORBID
obesity? If it excludes treatment for obesity, it should be covered as
MORBID obesity is life threatening and if it's not covered, it's
discrimination. Read the policy again to make sure. My policy had an
exclusion for treatment of obesity but covered my surgery because we proved
it to be medically necessary which it is if you meet the NIH criteria.
Please erad my profile. Good luck!

Thanks for your replies - yes, the policy specifically says "morbidly
obese", not just obese. Also, it isn't insurance through work, it is
my parent's insurance that I'm on since I am a college student.
