Question:
Has anyone had gastric banding/stapling prior to having the RNY?
I had both more than 15 yrs ago and have gained back all and more wt. My insurance is denying my precert because these surgeries were unsuccessful. Anyone else have this problem? — Kathy W. (posted on April 23, 2001)

I had the stomach stapling in 1988. I lost 80 pounds. Got married. Had
two children by c-section. Gained about 20 with each pregnancy but never
lost anything after their births! Had trouble nursing - nearly starved my
first child to death. Don't know if it was related to the VBG or not.
Then continued to gain back all of weight plus more. Also, I had trouble
eating anything but chips, cookies and candy. Pretty much everything else
came back up. I started to vomit blood, too. I ended up having the VBG
reversed in 1996. Then, had the RNY done 2/00. The RNY has been much
better for me. I feel good. I've lost 80 and would like to lost about 30
more. I can pretty much eat anything. I'm careful with the types of meat
I eat. The worst side effects for me are I get pretty gassy, depending on
what I've eaten. This last 30 is very hard for me to lose, too.

i had a horizontal stomach stapling in 1984. it worked fine for about 1
year and then i began to slowly gain my weight back. i am now almost at
pre surgery weight and i have to struggle and diet just to stay at this
weight. i am seeking a revision , probably to a rny. i would not
recomment the surgery which only restricts food intake because it slows
your metabolism down. i know this is only my experience, and i am sure
others have had success with it, but i have not. if i can help please
e-mail me. patti meadows e-mail: [email protected]
