Question:
Has anyone had their insurance pay for Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding surgery?
I realize that this surgery is still considered "experimental", but I heard that some insurances will pay for it. I have Cigna PPO. — Gloria P. (posted on April 2, 2001)

My insurance will not approve it as it is still considered experimental.
Most insurance companies do not cover experimental procedures but check
you never know.

I am under consideration for lap banding. I'm going Dr Rubienstien in LI
NY. He has done about 55-60 of these surgeries. Insurance has paid for
them. My friends in my support group have had no problem with getting
insurance to pay. We (they) have had only one refusal and she fought and
won. They do all the work at Caremax. This type of Banding( lap) is
different than the type done in sweden(open). The surgery is SUPPOSE to be
reevaluated in april and approved. I think insurance will pay becasue it is
so much less money vs the other surgery
