Question:
Has anyone else gotten extremely tired after eating???
Today is my first day on the "soft solids" diet after 3 weeks of liquids. For breakfast I had a small amount of cheerios, no problems...then for lunch I had tuna salad on low fat crackers (tuna, boiled egg whites, dill relish, light mayo). Almost immediately after eating I felt extremely sleepy, I had to go lay down because I couldn't keep my eyes open. Just coincidence or could it have been something in the tuna salad? Has anyone else experienced this? PS: I'm 3 weeks post op, open RNY. Thanks! :-) — Stephanie D. (posted on January 12, 2001)

Hi, I have had this happen twice but both times I had some sugar--once in a
protein bar and once in chicken salad. I just had to have a nap and then I
was OUT for two hours on the couch! I woke up with a slight headache.
Could this be related to dumping somehow? I think so! Someone told me I
was reacting to the carbs which you had in your crackers, cheerios, and
dill relish. I am just beginning to eat soft foods too. Perhaps we just
need to take it very slowly. By the way, is it ok to eat cheerios with
milk? Isn't that like eating/drinking at the same time? I am not sure
but I'd love some cheerios too! Good luck

Yes, classic dumping. Did you drink with your food? Did you drink the milk
with the Cheerios? Drinking with meals can do this, also there is a huge
wad of sugar in milk, so the milk alone can make you dump. 1 C of milk =
12g of sugar. You probably will not dump (or gain wt) on 6g or less. You
personal limit may be 5g or 7g, but about that. I've swron my head got so
bobbly that I could NOT hold it up!

Thanks for the responses! It didn't happen after I had cheerios (didn't
drink the milk either); it only happened once after I had the tuna salad on
crackers. Guess I'll have something else for lunch today LOL. Marilyn, my
surgeon said I could have cereal if it was "softened" in skim
milk but not to drink the milk after eating the cereal. I do get a tiny bit
of milk on the spoon but it just helps mush up the cereal. I had a tiny
amount of scrambled egg beaters w/ refried beans topped w/ low fat cheese
for breakfast today and it was YUMMM, so far no problems with the sleepies,
maybe that was just a coincidence w/ the tuna salad. Thanks again for the
input! God bless :-)
