Question:
Has anyone had a revision after an RNY rupture in the suture line?
I suffered peritonitis 5 days after WLS surgery in August and had to endure a second surgery immediately. I was in the ICU for a month, and almost died. Today I am doing okay, but have discovered through an upper GI test that the surgery itself was a failure. I have two ruptures in the suture line. To achieve a significant weight loss I am looking at a possible revision. — Christina L. (posted on December 10, 2000)

I just looked at your profile and was wondering if you had the same surgeon
do your surgery that you spoke about in your profile, if so please find
another dr. to do the revision, if you were not impressed with him in the
beginning now maybe we can understand why! good luck i will say a pray for
you!

Christina, I am so sorry for all this happening to you but from what I have
read it is not all that uncommon. I don't know why some operations fail
but I am glad you are ok. It sounds like your staple line failed while you
were still in the hospital? do you know why? How many rows of staples did
you have and two rows disrupted? Why did the second operation fail also?
I really feel for you because this is not an easy operation. Don't feel
that this had any thing to do with you. Sometimes from what I understand
the tissue just doesn't adhere to the staples and form a seal like it
should. I am thankful you are ok now. God bless

My staple line disrupted, so it was revised last Jan. I'm delighted. Both
surgeries were rather uneventful for me, except the 150# that fell off in
between. And yes, I WOULD do it again, but at least the staple line cannot
go again. First one lasted 5 yrs. I have a distal gastric bypass and this
one apparently is right for me. I did choose the same doc again, because
he no longer does the initial surgeries with a disruptible staple line.
Therefore, since he has learned to do them better, I could only benefit
from the newer surgery. And so I have.
