Question:
How can I avoid getting abcess and hernias?
I have read several messages where is mentioned abcess and hernia post op. What can I do to avoid getting hernias and abcess? — [Anonymous] (posted on June 8, 2000)

I developed a hernia at 8 weeks post-op from lifting boxes during a move,
after religiously following my post-op orders until I was cleared for
normal activity. You can reduce your risk of hernia by not lifting, pushing
or pulling any more than absolutely necessary, but just rising from a chair
may cause one. So can coughing, straining while on the toilet, etc... There
is no sure way to prevent them, but you can minimize the risk somewhat. I
can't offer any advice about abcesses. Good luck!
