Question:
I was reading in my book from BTC , that if you have been on a plateau
for more than 2 weeks you should call the nutritionist. So I will call her on Monday. In the meantime, if there are any who have gone through this, I would appreciate there support and encouragement, and tips as to what you did and how you got the old scales moving again. My surgery and healing has been so easy , it is truly a blessing, no problems. I suppose I shouldn't complain over this, but it is starting to worry me. Thanks for the input and good luck to all. — C S. (posted on April 2, 2000)

Don't know if this will work for you, but here are two things I've
discoverd. The more protein you eat the better you burn the fat....I lose
better when I've eaten fish..cod, swordfish, halibut etc. Usually at least
2 pound weight loss. Secondly, I have had such a struggle getting my water
in and my weight loss trickleing down to a pound or two a week....this
week, my feet started swelling. I started forcing the water to ensure I
was getting enough....drink drink drink..well, friday I lost 5
pounds...this morning 3 more. The only thing different I've done is to
make sure I was getting the water...I bought one of those 50 once jugs and
drug it with me everywhere. I've been eating right since the surgery and
excercising over 2 miles a day. My surgery was 2/2/2000 and as of this
morning I've lost 56 pounds. No more plautau for me..thanks to water...and
yes fish.

You and I discussed this privately and pretty much located the culprit
..right? However, Shelly makes a great point on the water..It is
essential to carry away the fat and you're doing great in that aspect.
Also Fish of almost any kind (Baked or Grilled) is without a doubt a must
to have in our food plan. I have some melt in your mouth fish recipes.
Even if you don't like fish you'll love these recipes..yummy... ;-)
Good Luck Carin I know you're on the right tract now...

Dear Carin, I tend to get very discouraged with the plateaus too--but they
will end! I am 6 months postop and have lost 87 lbs so far (I am 199!!!!).
I have experienced plateaus that have lasted as long as a month--and have
tried EVERYTHING that anyone suggested to break them--and the bottom line
is they just end when they end. No weight loss for this incredibly long
time then 5-10 lbs in a week. The encouraging thing is that during these
long plateaus--I DO lose inches! I finally got what I think is a pretty
sensible explanation for this: we have 2 "kinds" of fat--white
and brown. White fat is what we see under our skin that makes us look
fat--what we lose as we diet, etc. Brown fat is the good stuff that is
inside cushioning our organs and providing the immediate energy stores that
allow us mammals to maintain a constant body temperature. So while we
plateau we are not excreating any fat and therefore our wt. stays the
same--but the white is still being converted to good brown fat and as this
redistribution takes place we lose inches from our tummies, butts, thighs,
etc. It's a good thing! So anyway--go talk to the nutritionist--take
their advice--and remember that plateaus are a normal and healthy part of
losing weight. Good luck and best wishes...
