Question:
Items to have on hand post-op

For people on the larger size (BMI over 60) I think it is very important to have a rented hospital bed at home with a "trapeze" overhead. (I suspect if your doctor orders it, your insurance will pay for it--mine did.) I used the bed for about 5 days. I also had a cannister of oxygen with a long piece of tubing. It helped me to get around (especially to go up three flights of stairs) for about 5 days. I did not have any particular medical problems except mild asthma and osteoarthritis. But when I came home, I found it impossible to lie flat and breathe at the same time. The hospital bed will elevate your head and put your knees in a comfortable position. I found these two things the most important when I first came home. HDMatthias, M.D.    — Heddy-Dale M. (posted on March 2, 2000)
