Question:
Is anyone aware of financial aid for self-payers?
I am 530lbs and BMI 81. I have been denied by my insurance carrier twice and my attorney says the ins. co. will win in this district of the federal court if we sue. My employer is replacing the insurance co. next year, so the argument that it is cheaper to pay for WLS than to pay for treatment of comorbidities won't work. I am a teacher and single mother of three children and cannot afford to self-pay. Does anyone know of any philantrophic group or individual who will pay for my surgery? My children and my students need me! — ramlirobin (posted on February 14, 2000)

The Texas Rehabilitation Commission has [aid for this surgery before. I
think at your wieght and BMI they would help you. Good Luck!

Have you checked with your Human Resource group? For the companies that do
the self pay insurance, they can demand that the insurance company approve
the surgery for you. The HR group would agree that the company would save
money with you having surgery. There are many benefits: time away from
work would be reduced due to the decrease in obesity related illnesses;
medical cost would be reduced; production would improve due to having a
better self-image and improvement with sleep. Don't give up, doesn't hurt
to try. Best of luck. Janet
