Question:
Has anyone had an enlarged heart and still been able to get the surgery
A chest x ray reveals an enlarged heart. I am waiting for echocardio results. Has anyone had an enlarged heart and what did they do. I am having no symptoms from this yet. — Steve M. (posted on January 26, 2000)

I have no direct information about and enlarged heart and the
possibility of having gastric bypass surgery, however, here is some food
for thought.. Is your heart enlarged from taking diet drugs such as
Pondimin (fenfluramine), a/k/a fen phen or Redux (dexfenfluramine), if so
then you have only until March to join a class action suit against the
pharmaceutical company. Good Luck!!

I have a enlarged heart as well. Mine is from uncontrolled high blood
pressure.I have been denied, because my insurance says that I do not have a
life threatening condition, resulting from obesity. However, since I can't
get the B/P controlled the heart is only going enlarge more. So I am
appealing their decision. As far as surgery goes. the enlarged heart is no
problem.

I was told by the doctors at Kaiser I had an enlarged heart and also that I
had heart failure. I was put on BP Medication and a few weeks later I felt
better. I could not get treated very well at Kaiser and they didn't seemed
to be giving me the best of treatment. I had been asking to get WLS but to
no avail. They just stalled and stalled.
I decieded to seek treatment and got a very good doctor at the VA he gave
me a very good physical and along with that he did an echo of my heart
there he discovered I had a very strong heart and was pumping OK with no
restrictions. The echo person said that it is pretty common to mistake
large people with enlarged hearts because of their size. She told me it
was a little large but that every thing was fine.
I was really worried when the doctor at kaiser told me that and my ekg
check ok. At any rate the doctor at the VA referred me to the surgeon and
she is going to do my RNY WLS
Feb 9,2000. She has no problem with it so far.
Good Luck

I was born with a congenital heart defect, & had Rheumatic Fever at age
9. My surgeon had me get a second opinion, & a stress test. I passed.
My surgery was 3-15-00. No problems. Doing great. Good luck to you.

Hi! Well, I found out today I could have (not for sure until monday because
the picture on the EKG was bad) a
borderline enlarged right ventricle of the heart. I hope my risks dont
increase! Pray for me!! I've cried all
day because I am sure they are going to tell me I have 3 years to live or
something! hehe. Am I being overly
dramatic? :)
