i am also per-po. and i have been listening to what some of the other
post-ops have said too and they did not take very much with them so they
would not have to worry about their personal item if they went to walk
around. i would take just a few things for your own like rob since me know
how those gowns are open in the back, and maybe a couple of things to
change into because i know i do not like the gowns and maybe a pair of
slipers for your feet since you may or maynot be able to put shoes on . and
you will need your id but give it to the person that is taking you when you
are done with it you don't want to leave it there and maybe a little money
to buy a few things if you want. becuse you have to remeber the rooms do
not lock and you might be sharing your room with someone else.

I took my own toothpaste and a small bottle of mouth wash. I had small
bottles of my own shampoo. I took some of my own tolietries with me. I
you have an I.V. you may not be able to wear your robe. The hospital
should have gowns with snaps to change into. I wore to gowns to make sure
that I was covered up when I went walking. I hope that this is helpful.
God be with you on your up coming surgery! Congratulations!!! Lap-RNY

Comfy slippers with rubber soles for when you go walking.
I brought my robe because I didn't want my back side hanging out while I
walked- halls were drafty. Chapstick, hairbrush and ponytail
holders,toothbrush,alcohol-free mouthwash and don't forget your deodorant
because they might not let you shower until the last day. I would say the
top three are toothbrush w/ paste, chapstick, deodorant. And have your family
bring a camera if you want pics of you with your doc and nurses.

Everyone always laughs at me for this response, but YOUR OWN PILLOW!!! You
will be much more comfortable with your onw pillow or 2 than you will be
with hospital pillows. They are usually plastic so they can be wiped down
with antiseptic after each patient (I use to work in a hospital). Good
Luck!!! Carmen

First of all ---Congrats. You will not need as much as you think you need.
I very much agree with some of your other posts--such as your our pillow,
comfortable non skid slippers and a robe. I was really comforted by some
soft music. The best advise I can give is to have a friend or relative with
you. They were able to take care of my needs when the staff was not able to
immediately come in. They can also be a great advocate for you--especially
if your surgery is out of town. Plus you always have someone there to talk
with and to remind you to get up and walk. Good luck--

Hi Wanda, congratulations on your upcoming surgery. Make sure you bring a
toothbrush, toothpaste and mouthwash. Especially the mouthwash. It was the
only wet thing I could put in my mouth for the first day to day and a half
after surgery. I also took a picture of my husband and little girl, to help
me get through the pain and to give me comfort when I was alone. Good Luck.
God Bless.

Some hospitals give out Cough Buddies, but just in case they don't, bring a
harder pillow or firm stuffed animal to place on your tummy when you're
standing up, sitting down, sneezing, coughing, and for the ride home. Good
luck on your journey! Connie--22 days post op

I took most of what everyone else is suggesting but I also made sure I took
reading material and puzzle books!! It gets kinda boring laying in that bed
and sometimes TV isnt enough!! Also make sure you take something loose and
comfy to wear home!! Good luck and may God be with you!!

Take a robe and slippers for those promenades through the hall. The
hospital usually gives you sock-slippers, but having your own is better.
Also bring reading material and other things to occupy yourself. If you
have aCPAP machine for sleep apnea, you should take that with you. Also
bring your smile: you will need it. Good luck!

Robe, comb or hairbrush, toothbrush and paste, deodorant. You won't feel
like reading or even like watching much TV, all you will want to do is
sleep to get away from the pain. Good Luck and God Bless and Welcome to the
World of Loosers!!!

Look's like everyone has just about everything covered. If you are a
comfort buff like me. I needed all of my comforts. My own pillow or
pillows. Mabey even your own blankie. Toiletries because theres suck.
Chapstick and lotion because hotpitals are so dry. Robe and slippers
because they WILL make you walk. Mabey even something to do if you are not
too knocked out from the pains meds. You should have seen me trying to play
Skip Bo on morphine. Ha Ha Ha... Wasnt pretty. I had the open though so I
was in for four days. Good Luck

I took everything suggested earlier but found I really didn't need any of
it, except the slippers. I could't wear my own robe because of the IV and
the Hospital provides everything else. I found my son had just that much
more to carry on our trip home. I had an open RNY, so if you're having
something less envasive, maybe you can use all that other stuff. The only
thing I would suggest is kind of embarrasing. I was horrified when I
couldn't reach my own bottom after using the bathroom because of the
swelling, bandages and pain--I had bad diarrhea, as do most people. I
couldn't think of anything worse than having a male or cranky nurse wiping
me. So after a few days, I had my son bring a dishwashing sponge on a
stick and some extra thick baby wipes and I devised my own "potty
wiper" that kept me cleaner that when the nurses wiped me...and my
dignity was restored!
