Question:
How long until your first bowel movement post-op???

I am just 3 days out from surgery and was wondering how long does it take to have your first bowel movement? I have been passing plenty of gas but am concerned about the main movement. Thanks so much and sorry for the bluntness. :)    — DestrieLea (posted on October 22, 2004)

First of all, congratulations on journeying to the losing side! Secondly, I think everyone is different, but I had my first bowel movement at about 3 days post op. Make sure you get all of your water in. Joy

For me I was 12 post op before my first bowel movement. I thought it was going to never happen.

I had surgery on Tues 10/12 and I didn't have a bowel movement until Sunday. I was concerned about it and call the doctor. He told me to use a fleet enema for the lower bowel. I didn't do that I started taking a stool softener at night and haven't had much problem since. I don't go as often because I am not eating as much right now. Hope this helps.

the day i went home. talk about needing a room deodrizer!! LOL :) it varries, but most people go about 3-4 days after. you don't have much in there afterwards, so it can take a few days. if you've not had one within 5 days, you should tt your doctor. passing gas is a good sign though. it means your intesines are working, you just don't have much of anything in there to get rid of.... good luck!!
