Question:
Does everyone dump after eating sugar and sweets?
Hi, I went to a party yesterday. I am 4 1/2 months from my open surgery. I had it April l4th and have lost around 53 lbs. I ate a brownie. It was fairly big and very sweet with chocolate morsels in it. I did not get sick or feel anything afterward. I guess I was just curious to see if I was a dumper. I wasn't , at least not from a brownie. It did nothing for me , I guess I have been so used to not eating sweets that I feel I can easily do without them.I have no desire to hit the sweets but I just wanted to know if it would have an effect on me. So I guess the question is does everyone dump on sugar or am I just weird? Thanks for any input. Maureen — Maureen C. (posted on August 26, 2003)

i only sometimes dump on sweets. and then it is only that i feel really
nauseated for about an hour. i wish i had a worse reaction so i wouldn't
touch them.

I'm weird, too! I don't dump on small pieces of cake, but on normal sized
pieces I will field funny. I dump on pasta, though and have dumped on a
protein bar. Go figure. I have heard of people dumping on fruit so I
suppose everyone is different.

The answer is no. And to complicate things further, if you don't dump on
somthing today, you could dump on the same item tomorrow. Some dump on
carbs, some of fats, some on sugar... some not at all :-) Sounds like the
start of a new Dr. Seuss book. Best wishes -

Nope, never dumped on anything at all. Currently 13 months out and can eat
like normal, including sweets, so I have to be VERY careful!!

Congrats on your loss! You're not weird! You might not have had enough
sugar-- or you might be someone who doesn't dump. My advice: don't test
yourself, it's just asking for trouble. I have heard from others that once
you find out that you don't dump, it can be hard to stay away from sweets.
I have also heard of people who do dump continuing to eat sweets and then
they build up a tolerance, so they no longer dump. I think I dump on
sweets-- I know that after I had a few M&M's (I had to have them), I
felt weird and then had the runs. I also dump on (or have problems
with)anything that's high in fat, although I'm not sure if RNYers
technically "dump" on fats.

Maureen......I am 9 weeks out, down 53 pounds and I haven't dumped yet!
Everyone is different, so you might be one of those people who don't dump!

I am at 3 1/2 months, just a short ways behind you and I have not dumped
either, but I have really not pushed the envelope when it comes to sweets.
I have found more pleasure in sweet natural things like grapes, peanut
butter, a little Splenda on my cereal, SF homemade sorbet just to name a
few. Hope this helps.

I dump on starches but not sugars. I can eat the frosting but not the
cake. Too weird!

Liquid sugar will affect you more than solids. I can eat a brownie or
other sweets without dumping too, but at 4 months post-op I made the
mistake of trying a Starbucks white chocolate mocha coffee. It was so
good, I gulped down about 4 swallows and then experienced the whole range
of dumping-sweats, nausea, shakes, tired, dizzy etc. Apparently 30 percent
of RNY'ers do not dump.

I am 14 months out and I rarely dump. Only on something that is liquid
sugar, like lemonade. I avoid sugary beverages now. However, I could eat
candy until next Sunday and not dump. I have to watch my sugar intake
though because that gives me the munchies. Don't test yourself, sometimes
you don't want to know what you can tolerate. My biggest obsession that
made me fat was rice, especially fried rice. I haven't had rice since
surgery and I don't intend to. I assume that I won't tolerate it and I'd
be scared to know if I could. That's one can of worms I have no intention
of opening and I am happy that way. Good luck!

Dumping is not caused by what you eat. Dumping syndrome is caused by how
fast the undigested contents dump into the small intestine. I dump very
easily if I drink while i am eating, because the liquid pushes all that
food down too fast.

I've found I don't dump on sweets (though they don't turn me on much these
days) but the high fat stuff can cause probs...early post op I had an UGLY
episode with jalapeno poppers - never again!

To the poster who said dumping is not caused by what you eat - it certainly
is. It is caused by the undigested sugar and fat hitting the small
intestine which it is not used to dealing with. Therefore the sweats,
nausea, etc, etc.

Now onto the poster's question, not everybody dumps. I am almost
7 months PO and I di not dump, however I would NEVER eat a whole brownie at
the point I am - and hopefully never will. I'm just to darn scared to find
out how sick I might get. I no longer have a need to eat the whole thing.
I am satisfied with one or two bites of something sweet, therefore the
amount of sugar hitting my small intestine is quite small and I tolerate it
just fine. I might be one of those people who do not dump but I do not
feel a need to challenge that. I am happy with the things I can eat and
the amount of sweets and fats that I am okay with. It is a very normal
eating for me and for that I am grateful.

Now that you know you do not dump, what does that mean? Are you
going to keep pushing it? I'd be thinking about why it was important to
challenge your body at such an early stage. The first year is so critical
to your weight loss and pushing the limits is not going to help you reach
all of your goals. JMO

I don't believe I am a dumber, but I do not push the envelope either. I
will taste desserts, if I am so inclined. A bite or two or three...small
bites. It satisfies me and I have no desire to try for more. I do eat
plenty of watermelon and have no problems with that. I put a whole small
peach in my protein drink with a little splenda and have no probs. I do
have a problem when I eat too fast. Now I THINK I am eating slowly and
chewing well, but sometimes I guess I just get carried away and I get a god
awful pain right dab in the middle of my chest and I have to burp, burp,
burp. Bigggggg burps. Then I feel incredibly full and can't finish my
dinner. Ruins everything. Open RNY 10/30/02 minus 189 lbs.

Like everyone else is posting, everyone dumps on different things or even
not at all.....and the weird thing is that it's not consistent. You may
not dump on something today, but then next week the same thing might make
you dump. Go figure! The bad thing about knowing you tolerate regular
sugar is it's availability. Everywhere we look, there's cakes and candies
and candy bars, etc. Waiting in line at the grocery store you're
surrounded by every candy bar known to man. It's just too available. I do
my own baking with fructose or turbinado sugar and have written a recipe
book for special occasions for RNY'ers. It is available by clicking on my
profile or going to www.freewebs.com/recipes-after-rny When I'm at the
store and tempted by the Snickers and M&M's, I remember that I can bake
something to satisfy my sweet tooth at home....and by then it's usually too
much effort to get everything together, so I skip it and save the calories
and fat. Good luck to you!

i,m only 2 weeks post-op but the goal i,m reaching for is not to only lose
weight but to establish healthy eating habits so i can keep the weight off.
i have heard "Horror" stories where people has had this surgery
and lost over 100 lbs only to gain some if not all of it back. i,m
determined that won,t happen to me. i didn,t put myself through this to
allow that to happen. i want to be very careful what i put in my mouth. i
am a big sweet eater (or was) but i haven,t had a desire for sweets since
surgery. as far as dumping i sucked on a "sugar free mint" the
other day and got very sick off of it. everything in my stomach came back
up. needless to say that won,t happen again. just be very careful, i,m glad
you didn,t dump off of your brownie, but to me that would be a bigger
temptation to eat more sweets and we all know that,s a good way to put the
pounds back on. "Good Luck and God Bless".

I'm 11 months out and have NEVER dumped. I prefer to still believe that I
could though, so as to avoid temptation! Luckily sweets are not a big
temptation to me, but I have had a piece of birthday cake, some sweet
coffee drinks etc and had no reaction. I have noticed that if I eat
something high in sugar, I feel sluggish and tired but that's about it.

Sorry folks but can we please go back to that part about REALLY LARGE
BROWNIE after only 3-1/2 months? Why would you do this to yourself?
Sugar, fat, carbs carbs carbs, fat, sugar. Honey, you've only just started
your life journey, why in heaven's name would you want to screw up it up
this way? Compliance is all in the first year. Try a bite, a crumb, a
forkful, and walk away knowing you got a bit of sweets in. Then back to
the water, protein, all of the post-WLS regimen. Please!!!
