Question:
I know this sounds like I'm a big baby, but does it hurt to get the staples removed?
I had Lap RNY on 7-10-03 and am ready to get them out, but am worried that it will really hurt because they are tender to even touch. — Pam R. (posted on July 21, 2003)

I had no pain when my staples were removed, but when the drain was pulled
out, it was no picnic.

I had an open RNY. Most of them came out a couple I felt a small pinch but
that it it.

I had open rny 6/23/03 and didn't get my 32 staples out until 7/10/03. I
was so scared that I almost passed out from getting myself so worked up. I
had to laugh...only felt like a pinch, and that was only on some. The
others I didn't feel a thing.

I'm pre-op but had 25+ staples removed when I had my gall bladder removed.
I was so nervous and told the surgeon that I was too. He smiled and told
me not to worry, it really doesn't hurt. It really didn't. Maybe a quick
pinch but no pain. You will be fine.

Nope mine didn't hurt either. Worked myself up for nothing as well. Good

I actually thought it felt kind of good! A little pinch here and there, but
such a relief to get those darned things out and I was so much more
comfortable afterwards! Barb Open RNY 4/07/03 235/176/126-130

Like the others said...just a little pinch here and there. My surgeon put
Steri-strips on afterwards. I was just glad to get them out...another step
forward in my healing. Don't worry about it at all. Hugs, Joy

I was too busy watching my kids giggle. Everytime the surgeon pulled out a
staple, they would say "Ouch" and then start laughing. They were
so silly that they had the surgeon laughing. You gotta love silly kids!

Well guess I'm in the minority here...and for that I'm glad. Hate to think
that this staple issue was a pain for everyone! I had 48 tiny staples and
the top 10 burned and pinched when they came out. I have a pretty high
tolerance for pain so was surprised that tears sprung to my eyes for the
first few. I found lamaze type breating helped a lot!

I know that this answer won't help you, but it may be of interest to others
reading this question. When I first read your question, I had a brain cramp
and thought "did it hurt to have my staples removed?" (Remember
it's been almost 3 years since my surgery!) and then I realized duh!!! I
didn't have staples. My surgeon uses internal sutures and then uses the
dermabond (skin glue). It worked wonderfully! I have only a pencil-thin
line that has faded tremendously. So, for those of you still pre-op, don't
ASSUME that everyone has staples, because that's just not the case.

You get staples for lap? My sister, who had the lap procedure in May, had
sutures...no staples. I had at least 25 staples for my open procedure. It
did NOT hurt to have them removed. My surgeon removed them on day 4. The
day I was released to come home. My surgeon stitches internally and does
the staples. He did such a FANTASTIC job the incision is hardly noticable.
I had a drain in for a week after surgery and that was...well, interesting
when he yanked that out. Ewwwww

Hi there, Pam! I had 57 staples, from an open RNY and I can tell you
that.."NOPE", it doesn't hurt at all to have them removed and
trust me I am a huge wuss. It feels more like someone is lightly pinching
your skin or even trying to pluck a hair on your tummy. Vi. Open RNY

I had 50 staples from open rny and they didn't hurt that much. It was more
of a light pinching. They use special "scissors" that seem to
bend the staple upward from the center. Let me tell ya, it was something
strange to watch being done!!
