Question:
Should I be in liquids 2 days before surgery.......
On Monday is my surgery, and my doctor told me to be on liquids two days before surgery, because if not the liver gets really big and it's more difficult to operate. I am having open wls proximal.Did you guys ate until one night before, or not?. I am hungry, two days is kind of long, when you are feeling great,I was planning to have a good tuna salad tomorrow and a dessert, but now I don't know. Thank you for you comments...... — Rosa M. Rosa- You need to follow your doctor's instructions exactly. First,
because fats enlarge your liver and the liver is kind of in the way when
gastric bypass is performed, you need to reduce the amount of fats you've
consumed in the days before surgery. Secondly, do you want to risk your
recovery by having a dessert and a tuna salad? Come on--- not to be the
token meanie here, but now is the time to change your mindset about food
and enjoy the spectacular new life that WLS makes available.
My doctor required very low fat for the 2 weeks before surgery and clear
liquids the day before. As I only had a week to prep for the operation, I
stayed on clear liquids for the two days before surgery. It's tough-- but,
what a great first step to take!
Lastly, don't buy into the psychological need for a "last
supper"-- you will have a longer and healthier life ahead of you with
ample opportunities to enjoy small portions of some of the foods that you
might be craving now.
We all know that it's tough-- but being obese with all the health risks and
discomforts is far more difficult.
Good luck!

My doc requires 2 days of liquids prior to surgery too. I didn't have any
problems sticking with it. I was so excited about the surgery it kinda
suppressed my appetite. Also the 2 days of liquids kinda acted as a bowel
prep too.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and welcome to the losing side. Lisa Open

My surgeon only requires that I do clear liquids the day before surgery.
BUT, I also have to do the go-lytely. I think I'd prefer fasting. Anyway,
my surgery is on Tuesday, June 24, so that Sunday night I'll basically be
eating. Everything.

While you may not always agree with what your doctor suggests, you really
should follow his requirements. Each doctor has a reason for requesting a
specific diet, bowel prep, medications before surgery ... So please even
tho you are hungry, stick to the liquid diet he gave you. It will be worth
it.

I would suggest that you do what your doctor tells you. All doctors are
different, but it is important to commit to following YOUR doctor's
directions. If you can't do it at this point, will you be able to follow
his aftercare plan?

I was required to go on liquids by noon the day before. I, unfortunately,
didn't get enough liquids in because they couldn't find a good vein for my
IV. Drink, drink, drink the day before. You'll more than likely to have a
catheter in after sugery so you won't have to worry about the bathroom

I agree with the previous posters that you should listen to your surgeon.
Even if you don't necessarily agree, if he believes you when you say you've
been on pure liquids for 48 hours and he gets in there expecting that and
finds something else, you've (1) ruined the doctor/patient relationship and
trust and (2) left him somewhat unprepared as to what to expect. On the
table is NOT the time to have lied to your doctor!
