Question:
Will they cancel if you have a head cold
Hi, I am so freaked out. I am scheduled to have my surgery, an open rny on Monday, April 14th. Thats just two days from now and my husband is sick and coughing and blowing his nose. If I should pick up his cold will they cancel my surgery. I am so worried about this as I have been working on this surgery since December of 2002 and now that the day is finally here I am so afraid somethng is going to go wrong. Please any input on this will be greatly appreciated. Also I might add that with the surgery being two days away I am not the least bit nervous just really excited. Although on Monday I am sure I will be a nervous wreck, I hope not but we will see. Thanks — Maureen C. (posted on April 12, 2003)

Hate to tell you this...but they probably would. My friend was scheduled
for surgery earlier in the year and got a cold and they cancelled her. I
think it has to do with your breathing...if you are all congested and they
knock you out, you could stop breathing during surgery...get an infection
in your lungs. Better safe then sorry. So...can you go stay with a
relative who isn't sick?????????

The same thing happened to me, everyone was sick but me with just a few
days to go and I was told to call if I started getting a fever, but they
never mentioned the cold. I'm with the last poster, better be safe than
sorry! It's hard enough being well going in :o) Good luck!

Hello On Sat 4 days before my surgery I got a head cold and I myself was
totally freaking out , well when I had my preaddmission testing on monday
nuthing showed up in my lungs or anything and yes I was conjested but they
did not cancel my surgery THANKGOD I also was taking Vit c for a month or
so before surgery and when I got sick I took 3 vit c a day at 500
millagrams a piece I think that helped me .......but if it is just a
seasonal alergy like mine was they should not cancel your surgery but I am
not a exspert on this , goodluck

Well, I hate to say it, but if you develop a cold they will cancell your
surgery. That happened to me, I developed a cold just two days before my
surgery and I was postponed for two weeks! I was so bummed! And the
frustrating thing was I wasnt around anyone with a cold! Just keep your
fingers crossed and start taking some Vit C and hopefully you wont catch
it! Good Luck!

Believe me you don't want any surgery if you have a cold! The deep
breathing is tough enough without that. You should go stay with another
relative or friend. You will probally get his cold if you stay. RUN!
