Question:
Is there any such thing as suger free cake?

I am really really REALLY wanting some chocolate cake, it is a craving I can't get to go away...(I never much cared for cake before surgery). Does anyone have a recipe for suger-free chocolate cake? I have no idea if I dump and don't plan on finding out, but I would really like to shake this craving, thanks. — thekatinthehat (posted on March 30, 2003)

Yes theres a great one made by sweet and low. Its a yummy box mix available in stores and on the net. They have icing too all sugar free. Do be warned in advance it tastes just like regular cake! Add much more water to the mix, the 1/4 of a cup it calls for makes a dried out inedible lump that wouldnt even mix. Just make it the constitency of regular cake batter. I add a tablespoon of canola oil sometimes. I have been meaning to e mail them and ask why they dont fix the directions. Their website
http://www.diet-shop.com/categories/default.asp#2
If I have time I am baking some and taking to our support group meeting. I always thought it would be nice to see a cake there. Kinda funny, a cake at a meeting. :):) BTWQ we found this cake oin our cruise last june. I couldnt tell it was syugar free. The icing is pretty good too.

Publix makes a sugar free cake they sell in the bakery department. We had one for a WLS friend's birthday and it was great.

If you look in the 'diet foods' aisle at most supermarkets, they'll have a section with sugar free/no sugar added products. Just remember that these are still pretty high carb. I am not one of those folks who says you shouldn't do any carbs, but just wanted you to be aware of that. I firmly believe that when you have a craving, it's better to satisfy it. I know when I have one, I'm better off doing that. Otherwise I tend to eat a bunch of 'good' stuff and end up consuming more calories than if I had just had a little of whatever I'm craving.

Oh do I have a cook book for you. It is called How Sweet it is Without the Sugar Delicious Desserts for Diabetics and Others by Jean C. Wade. It has so many wonderful things in it. cakes, brownies, pies, custards, cheesecakes, pudding, and so on. While these desserts maybe sugar free they are NOT fat free so self control is needed. Try your local book store have them order it or look on line.

ANother way to go is Splenda. I'm surprised no one mentioned it yet. It is a wonderful sugar substitute that is actually made from sugar, so it tastes just like it. Splenda makes a recipe book, or they also post some recipes on their website, I believe it's www.splenda.com. Everything I have made from the book, pie or cake, tastes exactly like a normal one, I give it to my friends, they have no idea its sugar free or almost sugar free. Try it!

I'd consider going at this from another angle. If you want to taste a good chocolate cake, order a piece while you're out at a restaurant, and split it with someone (just eat a forkful or two). Obviously, dumping is a concern, so that's why I'd limit your first try to a forkful or two, which most likely won't cause you to dump, but will be delicious and probably will be enough to satisfy your craving (unbelievable, but true). Splurging every so slightly like that has worked well for me (ten months out). What *doesn't* work, for me, is having a supply of something sweet (artificial or real) in the house, where I keep coming back to it and eating it again and again, because it's available. Often, something with a sugary taste can trigger sugar cravings regardless of whether or not you started out with good intentions using something made with a sugar substitute. Bottom line: Taste the really good stuff (sugar-free or not) while you're out; don't keep a supply of it around the house. Just my 2c!

I deprive myself from cake because I know I am not supposed to have it but on special occasions I don't. I have about two forkfulls of cake and that is it. I don't feel guilty because let's be honest; It feels so damn good to have a small piece and not the whole cake. Good luck to you!!!!!

Try your local Winn Dixie store or a Food Lion they both carry good s/f cakes and pies. The blueberry is great. Also for that choc. taste try Archway s/f rocky road cookies. I do not deprive myself of anything I just count it in my daily food plan and get lots of protein.

I have a pretty good recipe for chocolate cake, chocolate fudge brownies and a phenomenal carrot cake with cream cheese frosting....did you know you can make your own confectioners sugar at home? The recipe is in the book! It's all in my Desserts....and More! recipe book made just for us RNY patients....115 recipes that use turbinado sugar, fructose, and Splenda. You can visit my profile page or website at: www.freewebs.com/recipes-after-rny for sample recipes, photos and ordering information. Good luck to you!

Be careful with Turbinado Sugar. Just as the name says, it's sugar. Real sugar and just a little bit causes me the worst dumping accompanied by severe gas pain and dizziness. I can't take it at all, so I investigated...it's sugar, plain and simple, it just hasn't be refined quite as much as white sugar. but there are lots of things you can use, like Splenda. Just make your normal recipe that uses cocoa instead of semi-sweet chocolate squares and go with it. I've had trouble finding mixes, but a homemade scratch cake is better anyway.
