I had read that WLS patients should not have any carbonated beverages at all. I was a Diet Coke drinker but stopped drinking it 1 month before my surgery. Now that I am 4 wks post op I don't miss it at all. But, thank God for Crystal Light Lemonade and Iced Tea!

I drank 7-8 Diet Cokes a day before surgery --I am 5 months post-op and I do not even like the taste of Diet Coke anymore--I prefer water which I did not like before surgery and Crystal Lite -

I can't drink then. The carbonation in them hurts my stomache. I use to live on diet coke. Especially ones from the fountain. I can't drink anything carbonated. But the funny thing is is that I don't miss them. Paula

I also really like Diet Pepsi and was wondering the same thing. But being preop I decided to start on the water kick now. I think the thing for you would be to find a water you like. I tasted many bottled waters and found one I really like, because they really do not all taste the same(I hate Dasani). Now I find myself really wanting the water more than the pop a lot of times. Try it you might surprise yourself.

One day you are goingto be telling people like you, that you USE to drink that much soda... and look at you now! You're going to stop those habbits...and have a new wonderful life. You're going to beat this. I know you can. Water is your best friend.

I am 4 1/2 months post op, and I too used to be a soda-holic. I drank around 6-8 diet sodas per day. Since my surgery, I do not drink soda, since my doctor advised against it since the carbonation could cause problems with my pouch. Actually, every now and then I sneek a sip, and I think that it tastes terrible !! Best of luck.

I drank at least that much Diet Pepsi or Diet Coke as a pre-op. Quit "cold turkey" about two months before surgery, which makes it a year since I've had one. It bugged me at first, but now I could care less. Just one of many eating habit changes that are good to make, overall, if you can.

I am still a diet-pepsi junkie. I started back drinking it full bore at about 5 months post-op and today still drink 5 or 6 cans a day. I find it helps give me a full feeling between meals. It hasn't slowed my loss (that I can tell of course lol) and my surgeon is fine with it. That being the key here...your surgeon will have a post-op regimen he/she will expect you to follow.

IF you crave the soda post op, have a little, But try to cut way back. There are studies that are showing that soda decreases your absorption of calcium. That is why I avoid the soda. And i Was a big soda drinker pre op.

rosa, you won't be allowed sodas for awhile and once you are allowed and you have one for the first time, I promise you it'll be NASTY. I used to drink 6+ 20 oz diet cokes a day pre-op, had one at 2 mos out, BOY WAS IT NASTY! I craved it and crqaved it, my nutrionist said go for it and boy, I wish I had not. Good Luck to you. When I want soda, I put lots of ice and stir, stir, stir til it gets flat. Then it's o.k. to drink. The carbonation always made me feel bloated anyway so I love flat soda. Only in moderation though cause of the caffeine.

You can but you probably won't want to for awhile. The carbonation is uncomfortable right after surgery. I was addicted to Pepsi before surgery. Now every once in awhile I will drink part of one but it doesn't taste the same so I don't really have that much desire for it.

The carbonation really fills you up post-op, and it's uncomfortable. Also, many people believe that all that carbonation will stretch our pouches and render our "tool" less useful. I open my diet sodas and let them go flat overnight. Then the next day, I can drink them with no problem. Be careful, though, some people find artifical sweeteners can bring back sugar cravings. You'll have to see how it affects you post-op. You really can't tell pre-op how your body will react post-op.

I just had to respond to this question. I am just short of three years post-op. Before surgery I too was addicted to Diet Pepse. However, before my surgery, the surgeon stated that he did not want his patients drinking soda after the surgery because of the caffeine, because it causes a depletion of calcium. It was not until just this past month suddenly, that I have been able to tolerate soda. Before, the fizzing caused a great deal of discomfort in my pouch. Now, I am unsure why, I can drink it with no problems. I had a check-up last week with the surgeon and I asked him this question specifically, to which he answered the same thing he had told me prior to surgery; one diet soda a day is ok, he prefers his patient's to drink non-caffiene drinks. If we have to drink something containing caffiene, he stated only to take in one per day as it somehow effects the ability of calcium to be used effectively in our bodies.
