Question:
Tomato Consumption Post RNY- Juices and Soups?

Hi, I guess you could say I love tomatoes. I now drink at least 1 and sometimes 2 glasses of tomato juice every day. Also tomato soup is my favorite. Has anyone tried these successfully after an RNY? I guess I need to know so I don't stock up on either and then can't stomach them. Thanks, appreciate any advice!!!    — Maureen M. (posted on March 12, 2003)

V-8 is still one of my favorite drinks. I was drinking it right after surgery. 7 weeks post op down 35 pounds.

I love V8 and tomato juice. The only drawback that I see is that it is high in sodium. I am 8 months post op LAP RNY and down 110#. Best wishes on your process.

The one thing you want to watch out for is sugar content. I'm not sure about tomato juice, but tomato soup has a fair amount of sugar in it (12 grams per serving leaps to mind). I was really surprised about that, and a little bummed, when I noticed that as a post-op. So tomato soup is *not* one of my favs anymore ... once in awhile, but not all the time. Also, if you're particularly sensitive, early on, you may find that you dump on it.<P> As far as a tomatos themselves go, they're great (I don't think the sugar problem's present in plain tomatos), *but* -- as a fresh post-op, you probably don't want to eat the skins, so I'd skip 'em for awhile (til three months out or so? I dunno, check with the doc on specifics).

I am 5 months out and the one thing I crave most is tomatoes. Fresh, stewed or any way. I don't want soup or juice though. I fix chili with diced tomatoes and have to stop myself from standing over the pot picking them out before it is done. I wonder if my body is craving something in them. At least they aren't full of sugar or fat.

I love tomato products too. I drank a ton of v8 and tomato juice for the first few weeks after surgery. For tomato soup that is not full of sugar, I just use a can of tomato sauce with a can of water (or milk if you can tolerate it), then salt and pepper to taste. You can also add artificial sweetener if you crave the sweet taste like campbells.

I tolerate tomato products fine now, but one of the previous posters was correct about the high sugar content of the soup. My first dumping episode was from tomato basil soup. I didn't know WHAT was wrong with me! My dr also recommends waiting 6 weeks to try tomato products after surgery because of the acid. (Obviously I wasn't aware of that at the time! LOL) It didn't seem to do me any harm but you might talk to your dr and see what he/she recommends. I drink V8 now from time to time with no problem. Ditto with tomato sauces. I don't eat tomato soup anymore except for the occassional trip to La Madeleine. It tastes really sweet to me now, probably because I am more sensitive to sugar.

Oooooooooo! Tomato soup from "La Madeleine!" That's different ... definitely a treat I'd go for. (But not as a fresh postie!)

The first three months post-op, I lived for V-8 Juice and I still drink a lot of it. I really prefer it to tomato juice but can drink both. However, I cannot tolerate tomato soup and I love it. I dump on it badly - it is full of sugar, unfortunately. But everyone is different - you will just have to try it and see what happens. I wouldn't "stock" up on a lot of anything til you find out what tastes good and what your body will tolerate. Your tastes will change a lot after surgery.

I had some trouble keeping food down the first couple months. For a little while, I lived on V8 - it's great! Lots of vitamins. Also, when I go out, since I don't want to attempt too much alcohol yet, I order Virgin Mary's (like a Bloody Mary, but no vodka).
